COVID 19: Bangladesh reports highest single day case

Bangladesh continued to struggle against the rising cases of COVID-19 pandemic in the country even as it entered the second week of countrywide strict lockdown. There was no let up in the new cases and deaths due to corona as 11,651 people were found to be corona positive in the country on Thursday.

This is the highest number of single day infections surpassing the earlier figure of 11,525 recorded on Tuesday. The total number of people infected since the first case was detected in March last year now stands at more than 9.89 lakh. The number of active cases in the country is 1,17,081 constituting 11.8 percent of the total cases.

COVID deaths also continued to mount in the country with 199 people succumbing to the infection on Thursday. The highest number of 201 deaths in a single day was reported on Wednesday. Death toll in Bangladesh has gone up to 15,792.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has directed  the hospitals to increase the oxygen supply and number of beds across the country. In a directive issued on Thursday, the PMO also asked the authorities to  strictly follow the health protocols to ensure that the infection does not spread further.

On Day 8 of the lockdown, police arrested 1077 people in Dhaka for defying the COVID-19 restrictions in the city. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said that 5162 people have been arrested so far in Dhaka for defying the lockdown restrictions since July 1. More than 930 vehicles have also been fined during this period.
