Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Giriraj Singh, launched the Online Course Mobile App “Matsya Setu” on Tuesday.
The app was created, by the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA) , Bhubaneswar with getting the financial aid from the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad. The goal of the online course app is to distribute the most up-to-date freshwater aquaculture technologies to the country’s aqua farmers.
Features of the app
In the Matsya Setu app, recognized aquaculture experts will explain the basic concepts and will do practical demonstrations on breeding, seed production, and grow-out culture of commercially important fishes like carp, catfish, scampi, murrel, ornamental fish, pearl farming, and more.
Better Management Practices will be followed in maintaining the soil & water quality, feeding and health management in aquaculture operations were also provided in the course platform. For the learners’ convenience, the modules are divided into small video chapters that include supplemental learning tools. Quiz/Test options for self-assessment are also provided to motivate learners and create a vibrant learning experience. An e-Certificate can be generated automatically after each course module is completed successfully. Farmers can also use the system to ask questions about their concerns and get specific advisories from experts.
Speaking at the event, the minister emphasized on developing the capability of fish farmers which is an important component of spearheading the country’s technology-led aquaculture development. He underlined the importance of providing training in a variety of activities, including ornamental fisheries, seaweed farming, a feed preparation module, and post-harvest value addition. He stressed on the need of including successful inputs of the farmers.
He further stated that the app will be extremely useful for farmers in learning about technological breakthroughs and best management practices. Learning about the latest technologies will impact the adoption of scientific approaches in fish farming, resulting in increased production and profitability.
This software can also be used to convey the most up-to-date information on various programmes to stakeholders around the country, particularly fishermen, fish farmers, youth, and entrepreneurs, in order to support them and make conducting business easier. He expressed optimism that the software will be a wonderful learning platform for farmers.
During the event, Union Minister interacted with progressive fish farmers from various places in the country and took inputs from the farmers. During the interaction, he enquired about the cost economics of the various fish culture practices and also asked some of the successful farmers to share videos of 1 – 2 minutes of their projects implemented.
