Dubai savours Kashmir’s ‘Mishri cherries’

Dubai savours India’s fresh, juicy, & delicately harvested cherries as Kashmir exports the first consignment of the famous ‘Mishri cherries’ to the middle east nation.

In this story, we tell you not just about the Mishri variety of cherries, but, also how Kashmir contributes to 95% of India’s cherry production and what the accelerated agri-exports could mean for India?

About Kashmir’s Mishri cherry:

As the name suggests, the Mishri variety of cherries are known for its delectable taste and sweetness.

However, there’s more to it than just its taste as it is packed with multiple health benefits. It contains vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds.

Kashmir produces 95% of India’s cherries:

Kashmir, alone accounts for 95% of the country’s cherry production.

Apart from the Mishri variety of cherries,  Kashmir grows many other varieties of cherries like Makhmali, Double and Italy. This year, Kasmir has grown about 10-12 varieties of cherries.

It is also set to grow apples, peaches, apricots, grapes, almonds and walnuts, in the coming months.

What it means for India?

The export of India’s first consignment of the Mishri variety of cherries from the Kashmir valley has come as a big boost to India’s horticulture industry.

Agriculture contributes to 15% of India’s economy, providing employment to about 1.3 Billion people.

Thus, the move is geared to increase the farmer’s income, with increase in India’s share market as cherry on the cake.

Role of APEDA in export’s promotion:

The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) was established by the Government of India in December 1985 for the export promotion and development of selected agricultural products.

Recently,  APEDA organized many virtual buyer-seller meets for the promotion of selected agricultural products.

It has been holding interactions with farmers, FPOs, govt officials & other stakeholders to boost the export of apples, almonds, walnuts, saffron, rice, fresh fruits & vegetables from Kashmir.

Further, the organization provided support for ensuring food safety & quality shipment, to create a brand for cherries in the Middle East.
