In Wimbledon mixed doubles, India’s Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza advanced to the second round after beating compatriots Ramkumar Ramanathan and Ankita Raina in an all-Indian match.
It was the first time that two Indian pairs were facing each other at a Grand Slam. Experienced duo Sania and Rohan beat Ankita and Ramanathan 6-2, 7-6 in just over an hour. Sania and Bopanna, will now face the British pair Aidan McHugh and Emily Webley-Smith in the next round.
In the men’s section, top seed Novak Djokovic was in cruise mode as he handed a battling American qualifier Denis Kudla a straight-sets 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 in the third round. Djokovic took two hours 17 minutes to overcome 114th ranked Kudla.
Earlier, fifth seed Andrey Rublev defeated Fabio Fognini 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in under three hours to lead a Russian charge into fourth round.
Another Russian Karen Khachanov defeated Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 46 minutes.
Among other winners were 17th seed Cristian Garin, who defeated Pedro Martinez and Roberto Bautista Agut, who beat Dominik Koepfer.
In the women’s section, Tunisian battler Ons Jabeur continued her dream run as she stormed into the fourth round after packing off former champion Garbine Muguruza 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in three sets.
The 26-year-old Tunisian made it to the history book as the first Arab woman to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus defeated Shelby Rogers of United States 6-1, 6-4 in 66 minutes, while seventh seed Iga Swiatek of Poland outplayed Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania 6-1, 6-0. Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic also advanced by beating compatriot Tereza Martincova 6-3, 6-3.
