DRDO’s food products: Fulfilling food requirements of defence services

From medical devices to food products, DRDO ( Defence Research and Development Organisation) has always served the nation through planned and easily deployable technologies.

From medical devices to food products, DRDO ( Defence Research and Development Organisation) has always served the nation through planned and easily deployable technologies.

In another noble cause, Defence Food Research Laboratory, an establishment of DRDO has led to the development of packed rations/food products to cater to the strategic and operational requirements of defence services and to provide logistical support in the area of food supplies.

In the first place, it is important to understand that Indian troops often operate in far-flung terrains under adverse weather conditions. In operational situations, it becomes difficult for our soldiers to acquire the fresh produce needed to sustain life processes. Even the normal regime of cooking becomes extremely cumbersome. But through the dedicated efforts of our scientists and technologists, a vast array of shelf-stable food products has been designed to keep the morale of service personnel high at all times.

To meet the varied food challenges of our elite defence forces, Defence Food Research Laboratory’s Meals–Ready-to-Eat Ration technology has become an important part of our soldier’s life. It also incorporates retort pouch processed foods, shelf-stable no preservative chapatis/ preserved chapatis and survival ration.
