Kiosks being set up at 12 stations of Thiruvananthapuram Division to minimize Covid-19 transmission

To ensure passengers’ safety and minimize Covid-19 transmission during train journeys, kiosks are being set up at 12 stations of Thiruvananthapuram Division, Southern Railway. Now, both RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen tests can be done at the kiosks.

Kiosks have started functioning at Thiruvalla Station and Chengannur Station. Earlier, quotations for the contract were invited from willing accredited medical institutions, hospitals, and clinical laboratories for setting up of temporary kiosks for conducting Covid-19 Rapid Antigen Test and RT-PCR test at the Railway stations over Trivandrum Division for a period of three months.

*Oxygen Express*

Indian Railways joined the fight against COVID-19 and started running Oxygen Express the first of its kind to deliver Liquid Medical Oxygen.The Oxygen Express is hailed as the ‘train of life’ for saving lives during critical times. Overcoming all hurdles and finding new solutions, Indian Railways is continuing its journey of bringing relief by delivering Liquid Medical Oxygen(LMO) to various states across the country. It has crossed the milestone of 35,000 MT of LMO delivery in service to the nation.

*Covid Care Centers*

Nearly 4,400 COVID care coaches with 70,000 beds were positioned at various railway stations in the country. The Coaches are being used for very mild cases that can be clinically assigned to the Covid Care centers as per guidelines issued by the Health Ministry.

*Other Achievements of Railways*

Despite the COVID pandemic, during 2020-21 (up to February 2021), Indian Railways has achieved commissioning of 1,793 km length of newline, gauge conversion, and doubling works. Railway electrification of 3,003 route km and track renewal of 4,099 km was carried out. Total 1,009 bridges have been repaired/strengthened/rehabilitated/rebuilt and 925 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) were constructed.

During the current year, new line, gauge conversion, and doubling projects of a total length of 1,095 km costing Rs. 10,980 Crore have been commissioned. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor section between New Rewari-New Kishangarh-Madar (approx 306 km) was also commissioned in January this year.

Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala has recently rolled out the first prototype Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) AC three-tier economy class coach, with enhanced facilities. The trial for the same has been successfully completed.

Showing an extraordinary resilience against the pandemic, Indian Railways witnessed double-digit growth in Freight Traffic. Freight figures continue to maintain the high momentum in terms of earnings and loading in the month of May 2021 for the Railways. It recorded more than a 10% increase in freight loading as compared to the normal year of 2019-20. In FY 2021-22, Indian Railway’s total loading is 203.88 Million Tonnes (MT) which is 10% more than FY 2019-20 loading figures (184.88 MT) for the same period.
