Wimbledon Tennis: Roger Federer, Andy Murray & Alexander Zverev advance

At Wimbledon, eight-time winner Roger Federer survived a huge scare when French opponent Adrian Mannarino was forced to retire injured at the start of the fifth set of their first-round tie.

Earlier, two-time champion Andy Murray recomposed himself to ensure his return ended with a dramatic four-set victory over 24th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili.

No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany began his quest with an easy 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 win over Dutch qualifier Tallon Griekspoor.

In the women’s section, American great Serena Williams broke down in tears as her latest attempt for an elusive record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title was cruelly ended by injury.

Williams started against Belarusian world number 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich with heavy strapping on her right thigh and then slipped in the fifth game.

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty held off a spirited Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-7 (1-7) 6-1 to reach Round Two.

Five-time champion Venus Williams earlier beat Mihaela Buzarnescu 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 on her 90th Grand Slam appearance.
