In Telangana, an all-party meeting is being held to discuss the empowerment of Dalits in Hyderabad this morning. According to an official release, The Chief Minister will seek views from different political parties over the empowerment of Dalits to prepare guidelines for the proposed CM’s Dalit Empowerment Scheme. Leaders of all major political parties, Dalit MLAs, representatives of various Dalit welfare and rights organisations and senior officials have attended the meeting.
Our Correspondent says, the meeting is taking place in the wake of the death of a Dalit woman, Mariamma, in the police custody, earlier in the month. The 45-year-old woman was brought to the police station in connection with a theft case and reported to have collapsed and died in police station. While the Telangana High Court has ordered a judicial probe in the matter, the Chief Minister announced two days ago, a government job to the son of the deceased, a house and a total 35 lakh rupees as ex gratia to her children.
