Sensex gains 226 pts to end at 52,925; Nifty raises 70 pts to 15,860

The Sensex and the Nifty today closed with modest gains. Both equity indices rose more than 0.4 percent amid positive cues from the global markets.

The Sensex at Bombay Stock Exchange gained 226 points, or 0.43 percent, to trade at 52,925.

The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange also added 70 points, or 0.44 percent, to deal at 15,860.

The broader market at BSE also climbed. The Mid-Cap index ended 1.03 percent up and the Small-Cap index rose 0.4 percent.

In the Sensex pack, shares of 20 companies climbed while 10 fell. Tata steel was the top gainer as it surged 4.7 percent.

Axis Bank climbed three percent, SBI gained 2.8 percent and ICICI rose 2.3 percent.

In the list of companies which fell, Reliance plunged 2.3 percent.

NTPC declined 1.7 percent and Hindustan Unilever fell 1.6 percent.

In sectoral indices shares of 13 out of 19 sectors climbed.

The Metal sector rose 2.8 percent, Bankex gained one and half percent and Basic materials added 1.3 percent percent.

Among the list of sectors which fell, Energy sector stocks tumbled 1.8 percent and Oil & gas fell one percent.

The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 1789 companies gained while 1418 fell. Shares of 138 companies remained unchanged.
