Toycathon-2021 | Tradition & Technology are India’s greatest strengths: PM Modi

The Toycathon 2021 is a joint inter-ministerial initiative for the promotion of not just indigenous toys, but India’s vast History, Culture, its scientific ancient practices of Yoga, Ayurveda, Vedic mathematics, etc.

Toys are one of the first tutors of a child. Toycathon-2021 is thus, not merely a toy-making contest. It has much more far-reaching implications and utility for India.

It is a celebration of India’s creativity and innovation. It aims to tap India’s one billion dollar toy market to combat the large-scale (80%) import of toys to India. Thus, employing the innovative prowess of 33 crore students, toy-makers, experts, start-ups to crowdsource creative and out-of-the-box ideas.

It promotes the vision and mission of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and supports our local craftsmen.

What is Toycathon-2021?

The Toycathon 2021 is a joint inter-ministerial initiative for the promotion of not just indigenous toys, but India’s vast History, Culture, its scientific ancient practices of Yoga, Ayurveda, Vedic mathematics, etc.

The Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell and the All India Council for Technical Education along with the Ministry of Women & Child Development, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Ministry of MSME, Ministry of Textiles, and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting are working towards this initiative.

PM Modi’s interaction with students, toymakers & startups across India:

At the Toycathon-2021, PM Modi interacted with participants across India and lauded their efforts at brainstorming out-of-the-box gaming and toy-making ideas.

He appreciated Team – Makersclan’s efforts in developing an Educational board game for 8+ children for making Chemistry fun and easy to understand.

PM Modi lauded Team-5 ‘Bagh Chaal’ for reviving India’s ancient game among today’s generation. He further appreciated the efforts of the team in inculcating the good practice of looking after animals & birds among children.

Toy-economy to help our local manufactures & take our traditional knowledge to a global stage: PM Modi

At present, the global toy market is worth about $100 billion & India’s share in this is only around one & a half-billion dollars. Thus, PM Modi stresses the need to actively change the scenario to make Indians and India, as a whole, aatmanirbhar.

India imports about 80% of its toys and the country’s crores of rupees get vested in it, despite having such a rich tradition of Indian toys & games. PM Modi thus urged everyone to go #VocalforLocal at the Toycathon-2021.

Today, the world wants to understand India’s present potential, art & culture, and the society of India in a better way. Our Toys and Gaming industry can play a big role in this, says PM Modi.
