Continuing the strategic outreach exercise with the defence forces of friendly foreign countries, the Indian Air Force (IAF) kick-started a two-day (23rd June – 24th June) air combat exercise with the United States Navy today.
“The integrated exercise of IAF & IN with US Navy Ronald Reagan CSG gets underway today. The engagement of IAF forces is spread out over 23 & 24 Jun. A joint flypast by IAF, Indian Navy & US Navy will be executed during the exercise,” read one of the tweets of the Indian Air Force.
The exercise was carried out with Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group (CSG) in the Indian Ocean region (IOR). The exercise in the Area of Responsibility (AOR) of Southern Air Command saw IAF forces operate from bases under four operational commands, which included Jaguars & Su-30 MKI fighters, AWACS, AEW&C and Indian Navy’s LRMP P8I & Dornier MR aircraft. The US CSG fielded F-18 fighters and E-2C Hawkeye AEW&C aircraft on the western seaboard, south of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kochi and INS Teg along with P8I and MiG 29K aircraft also participated in the passage exercise with US Navy Carrier Strike Group Ronald Reagan. The Indian Naval warships along with aircraft from Indian Navy and Indian Air Force engaged in joint multi-domain operations with the Carrier Strike Group comprising Nimitz class aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey and Ticonderoga class guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh.
Demonstrating synergic relationship
The two-day exercise aims at strengthening the bilateral relationship and cooperation by demonstrating the coordinated and integrated comprehensiveness in maritime operations. High tempo operations comprise advanced air defence exercises, anti-submarine exercises, cross deck helicopter operations. The synergic exercise will endeavour to hone their war-fighting skills and enhance their interoperability as an integrated force to promote peace and stability in the maritime regions.
Indian Navy and US Navy regularly undertake a host of bilateral and multilateral exercises which delineates the shared values as partner navies, in ensuring commitment to an open, inclusive and rule-based international order.
