Around 40 cases of Delta Plus variant have been reported in the country so far. Health and Family Welfare Ministry said that this variant has been observed sporadically in Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh. It said, as of now, over 45 thousand samples have been sequenced in India. These states have been advised for strengthening surveillance and appropriate public health measures by the Union Health Ministry. States have been asked to enhance testing, quick contact-tracing and priority vaccination in defined geographies where Delta Plus variant has been detected.
The Delta Plus variant is characterized by the K417N mutation in Spike protein. Health Ministry has said, the role of AY.1’s role in immune escape, disease severity or increased transmissibility is under continued surveillance.
