With 32 days to go for Tokyo Olympic Games, All India Radio today brings to you a special story on the life of Deepak Punia, ranked No. 2 by United World Wrestling for Tokyo.
Born on May 19, 1999 in Jhajjar, Haryana, Deepak has been seeded second by World Wrestling body for Olympics in the 86 kilogram category.
Deepak won a silver medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in the freestyle 86 kilogram category and secured a place for Japan. Deepak’s father and grandfather competed in local dangals in Jhajjar town and he used to accompany them since he was four years old.
In order to earn some quick money to fund his career, Deepak started participating in local competitions after watching his cousin Sunil Kumar, who happened to be a well-known name in the dangal circuit. It was in 2015 that Deepak was taken to the Chhatrasal Stadium for formal training by his cousin.
