With only 35 days in the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian contingent is making the last few rounds of changes. Hockey India has announced the final squad for the women’s Hockey team which will fly to Tokyo.
The 16-member squad has a perfect blend of young and experienced players. The team features eight debutants for the Olympics and eight veterans who were part of the 2016 Olympic squad. The Tokyo Olympics is the third appearance for the women’s team. Earlier, the team participated in the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
The squad includes eight players from the previous Olympic edition. Rani, Savita, Deep Grace Ekka, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Monika, Nikki Pradhan, Navjot Kaur, and Vandana Katariya will be leading the team as the eight players have a total of 1,492 caps between them for team India.

Indian women’s team gaining momentum in past few years
In recent years, there has been a steady growth in Indian women’s Hockey. Indian has clinched their second consecutive Olympics qualification by their consistent performances in the qualifying matches. The team is currently ranked 10th in the world ranking.
Since Rio 2016, the team has won the 2016 Asian Champions Trophy, 2017 Asia Cup, and a Silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games. The team also made it through the Quarter Finals of the 2018 Women’s World Cup for the first time in history.
India in Pool A
The Indian women’s team is placed in Pool A along with defending champions Great Britain and world number one side the Netherlands. Germany, Ireland, and South Africa are the other teams in the pool.
