The Ministry of Health in a letter written to the States and UTs today has instructed the inclusion of Unique Disability Identification (UDID) Card as a Photo ID while registering on Co-WIN 2.0.
The letter states that the UDID card, issued to persons with disability by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, comes with all the necessary features such as the name, year of birth, gender and person’s photograph. It meets the criteria for use of identification in COVID-19 vaccination.
This step has been taken in order to further facilitate access to vaccination for persons with disability. Earlier, as per the Guidance note for Co-WIN 2.0 issued on 2nd March 2021, seven prescribed Photo IDs were specified and prescribed for the verification of beneficiary prior to their vaccination.
The government of India has been constantly supporting the efforts of States and UTs under the “Whole of Government” approach in order to ensure a smooth and effective vaccination drive.
The Centre had developed the CoWIN digital platform, specifically to streamline the process of vaccination for various categories of beneficiaries across the country.
Currently, CoWIN is working as the technological backbone of India’s vaccination drive. The app provides for an effective rollout for scaling up the mechanism of the COVID Vaccine Distribution System.
The government has decided to include the UDID in the list of prescribed Photo ID documents for COVID-19 vaccination and has informed that the necessary provisions for the same are being made and would be available in Co-WIN shortly.
In a press release issued by the Health Ministry, the States and UTs have been advised to widely publicise the use of UDID card as a permissible photo ID for accessing COVID Vaccination.
