Rs 1,500 assistance, mental health support and special assistance at vaccination centers for transgenders: The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment
The Government of India on Monday announced a one-time subsistence allowance of Rs 1,500 for each transgender as immediate support to meet their basic requirements during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has taken this decision as a response to the distressed calls and email made by the transgender community seeking government help in light of the current COVID situation.
Just like everyone else fighting with COVID in the country, the transgender community have also been critically affected by the pandemic majorly because of serious disruption of livelihoods. The ongoing situation in the country is compelling this marginalized community into extreme distress and an acute shortage of basic needs like food and health.
HOW TO APPLY
Any transgender person or CBOs on behalf of the transgender person can apply for financial assistance after providing basic details, Aadhar, and bank account number in a form available on the website of the National Institute of Social Defence.

One can also get the form on social media as it is being circulated with the help of NGOs and CBOs to ensure maximum reach.
Even during the first lockdown, the ministry had provided similar financial assistance and ration kits to the community. Approx Rs 98.50 lakh were distributed among 7000 transgender persons across India.
COUNSELLING SERVICE HELPLINE
The ongoing situation has been difficult on everyone’s mental health and to tackle the same, the ministry announced a free helpline for distressed transgender persons where they can seek psychological support and mental health care.
The centre has also issued a Helpline number 8882133897 for any transgender person seeking psychological support can connect.
This number will be functional from Monday to Saturday between 11 AM to 1 PM and 3 PM to 5 PM.
One can reach out for counselling services that will be provided by professional psychologists.
Vaccination of transgenders
The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has also written a letter to the principal secretaries of all states in order to ensure no discrimination against Transgender persons in existing Covid /vaccination centres.
A request to conduct awareness drives especially reaching out to the Transgender community in different vernaculars making them informed and aware of the vaccination process is also made. Along with that, a request has also been made to the states to organize separate mobile vaccination centres or booths for vaccination of Transgender persons such as those taken up in the states of Haryana & Assam.
