In Italy, at least 14 people died and a child was seriously injured when a cable car fell on a mountain near Lake Maggiore yesterday.
Stresa’s mayor Marcella Severino said, the accident happened as the cable car was travelling up the mountain in the Alps, with the cabin dropping some 20 metres and rolling several times down the steep slopes before it was stopped by trees. The mayor said it appeared that a cable broke, sending the car careening until it hit a pylon and then fell to the ground. Authorities believe there were 15 passengers riding on the cable car at the time of the crash.
The death toll has risen to 14 after one of two children taken to hospital died. The other young child, who arrived at the hospital conscious, remained in serious condition, authorities said.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry said it has been informed by Italian authorities that five of its nationals were among the dead and one Israeli was in a critical condition.
Italian government announced an inquiry into the incident.
