Odisha govt declares ‘Mucormycosis’ an epidemic

Odisha government has decided to include Mucormycosis as a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases act 1897.

The decision has been taken in view of the reported rise in incidences of black fungus among covid-19 patients, currently under certain drugs and also among patients in the post-covid period.

AIR correspondent reports, earlier, the state government had already formed a state level task force to formulate guidelines for early detection and management of such cases.

The committee had recommended to include black fungus as a notifiable disease so that the report on all such suspected and confirmed cases can be shared for early treatment and monitoring.

It has also been clarified that Mucormycosis has not been declared as an epidemic in the state as yet.

Meanwhile the daily new cases of covid-19 infection continue to hover around 10 thousand, leading to a total active caseload of about one lakh six thousand, as of now.
