Indian club to participate in AFC Women’s Club Championship 2021 pilot tournament

Women’s Football is gaining popularity, slowly but surely in India. The increasing popularity of the Indian Super League, I-League, and Indian Women’s League is proof of the enhanced viewership and the interest of football fans has increased many folds.

Sports has grown out of the nascent stage. Apart from national teams, now even the clubs from India are being recognized on the world platform through their stellar performances.

Recently, FC Goa competed in the AFC champions leagues which was a major milestone for club football in India. AFC Champions League or ACL is an annual continental club football competition organized by Asian Football Confederation, AFC. And now women’s football is ready to take on a giant leap, as an Indian club is set to feature in the AFC Women’s Club Championship 2021.

AFC Women’s Club Championship 2021

The tournament will be played between October 30 to November 14, 2021, which will feature eight different clubs from eight different nations. Group A will consist of clubs from Taiwan, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. While Group B is set to feature a club each from India, Iran, Jordan, and Uzbekistan.

Which Indian club will compete in the Championship?

The suspense is immense. The club to participate from India will be decided by the Indian Women’s League. The champions of the league will represent India in the pilot tournament of AFC Women’s Club Championship 2021. These matches are set to be played soon. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has confirmed Odisha as the venue for the Indian Women’s League 2020-21 edition.

Over the years, the Indian Women’s League has provided the platform for a lot of budding women footballers to showcase their talent and provide them with the option of taking up football as a career.

2022 – An exciting year for women’s football in India

India will be hosting two major international tournaments in the year 2022, which will give impetus to women’s football in the country. First of these is the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2022 which will be followed by the FIFA U-17, that is under 17 Women’s World Cup 2022.

Sixteen countries will participate in the FIFA U-17 World Cup. The teams will be divided into four groups and the matches will be played across five venues in India. Football fans across India will have plenty to cheer for India in the year 2022.
