The agencies of the Central Government are continuously procuring Rabi crops at Minimum Support Price as per existing price support scheme.
The Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ministry has said that over 292 lakh metric tonnes of wheat have been procured by the government agencies during the current Rabi Marketing Season.
It said, 70 per cent more wheat has been procured by the agencies in this season in comparison to corresponding period of last year.
This exercise has benefitted nearly 29 lakh farmers.
The Ministry said, major contributions have been made by the States of Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh in the ongoing procurement of wheat.
The Ministry further said, Haryana and Punjab switched from indirect payment of Minimum Support Price to direct online transfer of benefits to farmers’ bank accounts as a part of a major shift in the payment mechanism as per the direction of the government.
It said, this is the first time, when farmers of Punjab and Haryana are receiving direct payment in their accounts for their crops without facing any delay.
The Ministry said, over Rs. 17,000 crore have been directly transferred to the accounts of farmers in Punjab and over nine thousand crore to farmers of Haryana for their crops.
