Concerned with the spike in COVID-19 cases across the state, Meghalaya Government has today decided to impose 10-day containment measures across the capital city Shillong (urban agglomeration) and two other towns; Jowai and Tura.
After a review meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed the media that the containment measures will begin from 1st to 10th May 2021. During the period only essential Government Offices will function including private companies who are rendering essential services, while other non essential Government offices are to work from home. The Deputy Chief Minister said that subject to self-declaration and adherence to COVID protocols, emergency movement of vehicles will be permitted for people moving to avail healthcare services, including emergency and vaccination. He clarified that the 10 days containment measures are to restrict the movement of the public unnecessarily and it is not a lockdown.
He stated that all essential shops will remain open across all areas however the dates and timings will be notified by the concerned district administrations. He mentioned that all public, political, social and religious gathering is not allowed, including meetings, religious services, except wedding and funeral subject to adherence of protocols which will be regulated by the respective district authorities. Further all sporting activities, education institutes will be shut. All other non-essential movements of public and private vehicles will be stopped except for those providing emergency and essential services. He cautioned that those violating the protocols will be subjected to penalties.
All inter or intra-district movement to and from Shillong, Jowai and Tura and other containment areas will be restricted, except for those under special emergency services during the 10 days containment measures.
