“Arise, awake and stop not until the goal is reached, Let us make this a Decade of Action against Climate Change,” PM Modi at Leaders’ Summit on Climate Change

Prime Minister Modi participated in an event called Leaders’ Summit on Climate Change at the invitation of US President Biden today on the occasion of Earth Day.

This is a two-day conference that is supposed to galvanise efforts by the major economies to tackle the climate crisis while also underscoring the urgency – and the economic benefits of stronger climate action.

Climate Change is a lived reality for millions around the world

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Modi said that for humanity to combat Climate Change, concrete action is needed and India has been doing its part by setting great targets and initiating measures to control Climate Change.
“We need such action at a high speed, on a large scale, and with a global scope. Our ambitious renewable energy target of 450 Gigawatts by 2030 shows our commitment,” the Prime Minister stated.

India, despite its development challenges, has spearheaded many bold steps on clean energy, energy efficiency, afforestation and bio-diversity which ranks it among the few countries whose NDCs are 2-degree-Celsius compatible.

“We have also encouraged global initiatives like International Solar Alliance, LeadIT, and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure,” informed PM Modi at the Leader’s Summit.

India-US climate and clean energy Agenda 2030 partnership

The Prime Minister declared that the “India-US climate and clean energy Agenda 2030 partnership” has been launched in collaboration with US President Joe Biden.

India has realised its objectives as a climate-responsible developing country and welcomes partners to create templates of sustainable development in the country. “These can also help other developing countries, who need affordable access to green finance and clean technologies,” suggested PM Modi at the Climate Summit.

Fighting Climate Change? Let’s Go Back to Basics

Hailing India’s per capita carbon footprint which is 60% lower than the global average the PM Modi iterated that It is because India’s lifestyle is still rooted in its sustainable traditional practices.

Therefore, emphasizing the importance of lifestyle change in climate action, the Prime Minister called for Sustainable lifestyles changes under the guiding philosophy of “Back to Basics” which can be an important pillar of economic strategy for the post-COVID era.

PM Modi ended his speech by recalling the words of Swami Vivekananda once said “Arise, awake and stop not until the goal is reached”. Under the same tutelage, the world must come up with ways to make this a Decade of Action against climate change.
