Only a small percentage of COVID-19 patients require Remdesivir: Top doctors discuss COVID-19 situation in the country

Addressing a virtual conference with Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman Narayana Health, and Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman Medanta Hospital, AIIMS Director Prof (Dr) Randeep Guleria said on Wednesday that it is important to understand that even after the vaccination, we may contract the virus. So, it important to continue to wear a mask even after getting vaccinated.

Vaccine prevents you from getting disease it may not prevent you from getting infection:

“I want to reiterate that vaccine prevents you from getting disease it may not prevent you from getting an infection. But the antibodies which have been produced because of the vaccine that you have taken will not allow the virus to further replicate and it will not allow the disease to become severe,” Dr. Randeep Guleria added.

Oxygen is a treatment, it’s like a drug

Dr. Guleria further stressed that medical oxygen should be used judiciously. He further reassured that individuals with oxygen saturation in the range 93-94% do not need to take high flow oxygen just to maintain their saturation at 98-99%.

Dr. Trehan echoed his observations and requested people not to use Oxygen as a “security blanket”.

“Waste of oxygen will only lead to depriving someone who needs it,” Dr. Trehan added.

Dr. Devi Shetty also urged people to check their oxygen saturation at least once in 6 hours. He noted that a person with oxygen saturation above 94% should be considered as good.

Remdesivir isn’t a ‘Ram-ban’

All the doctors unanimously reiterated that only a small percentage of patients require Remdesivir. Depending upon test results, symptoms, comorbidities of a patient it needs to be subscribed.

The doctors added that only 15% may go to the moderate phase of the disease and the rest will recover without any specific treatment in the form of Remdesivir etc.

The doctors further appealed to citizens to follow COVID-appropriate behavior in order to break the chain of transmission of the virus.
