Sensex ends below 243 points, Nifty closes below 14,300

Pharma and Auto indices gained 1 per cent each, while IT index declined by 1 per cent. BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices ended in the green. BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 slipped 0.51 and o.44 per cent respectively today suffered sharp losses in the late afternoon deals. The Sensex of Bombay Stock Exchange closed below the 47,800 mark while Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange settled below the 14,300 level. The Sensex declined 244 points to trade at 47,706. The Nifty50 also slipped by 63 points to trade at 14,296.

In Sensex shares, 14 shares out of 30 companies declined. Ultratech Cement is the top loser as it slipped more than 4 and a half per cent followed by the HCL Tech which declined 3.55 per cent, HDFC slipped 3.42 per cent, Tech Mahindra declined 1.93 per cent, HDFC Bank plunged 1.55 per cent and HUL declined 1.24 per cent. On the other hand, 16 stocks out of 30 Sensex shares closed on the green side. Dr Reddys Labs rose 3.42 per cent and Bajaj Finserv gained 3.33 per cent.

The broader market at the NSE saw positive demand. The Nifty Midcap 100 index gained 0.30 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index surged 1.00 per cent. In Nifty Midcap 100, Aditya Birla Fashion gained more than 5 and a half per cent, Jindal steel rose 4.29 per cent, Jubliant Pharmova surged 4.08 per cent. Dalmia Bharat and Dhani Services Slipped more than 3 and a half per cent while Coforge Ltd and Dr Lal Pathlab declined more than 3 per cent. In Nifty Smallcap 100, Wockhardt gained more than 10 and a half per cent. On the other hand, DCM Shriram declined 6.16 per cent.

In BSE sectoral indices, 13 out of 20 sectors gained. The BSE SME IPO sector rose 0.85 per cent followed by BSE Midcap Select and BSE 250 Smallcap which gained more than 0.50 per cent and BSE 400 Midsmallcap surged by 0.47 per cent. On the other hand, BSE Sensex 50 sector ended on the red side and declined 0.44 per cent, followed by BSE Largecap which plunged 0.39 per cent.
