In our Special Series Year ender-2020 today we bring you a report on Jal Jeevan Mission. The Centre has initiated this Mission to provide safe and adequate drinking water to every rural household of the country by 2024 with the motto Har Ghar Jal. To achieve this goal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi created a new Jal Shakti Ministry last year in his second term. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the Jal Jeevan mission on 15 August last year to make drinking water available to all households.
Talking exclusively to AIR News, Secretary, Ministry of Jal Shakti, U P Singh said, Goa has become the first state to have 100 per cent functional household tap connection. He said, four more states and Union Territories are likely to achieve the goal next year.
AIR Correspondent reports that under the Jal Jeevan mission, the focus is on 256 water stressed districts and one thousand 592 water stressed blocks.
The Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide drinking water in every rural household. There are about 19 crore households in the country and only 24 percent have Freshwater Household Tap Connections. Earlier, only 16 percent of the households had access to drinking water through tap connection. Thanks to the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission, drinking tap water now reaches over 31 percent of households in the country.
Government has provided tap water connections to over 278 lakh households till date. At present more than six crore rural households in the country are getting potable water in their households through taps. A step which will not only improve the lives of rural population especially women and girls but also save them from drudgery as well as water-borne diseases.
During the COVID pandemic one of the lessons learnt has been to wash the hands frequently. It requires availability of water supply within the premises of the schools and anganwadi for drinking, cooking mid-day meals, hand washing and use in toilets. The Mission’s motto has been of great help to the citizens in these challenging times.
In 2020-21, a sum of 23 thousand 500 Crore rupees has been allocated for the implementation of the JAL Jeevan Mission. The Jal Shakti Ministry has been implementing the Jal Jeevan mission in partnership with States to provide potable water in adequate quantity of prescribed quality through tap connections to every rural household in the country. The idea is to ensure ease of living, improve quality of lives and also create employment opportunities in rural areas with the tagline Har Ghar Jal by 2024.
