The Narendra Modi Government recently completed the first year of its second term. AIR correspondent takes a look at the slew of measures taken by the Railway Ministry in the last one year. Indian Railways has accorded high priority to safety and security of the passengers. It has taken several measures for safety improvement including massive renewal of railway tracks, effective track maintenance, stringent monitoring of safety aspects, improvements in signaling systems and use of modern technology for safety works. All unmanned level crossings were eliminated in the country whereas one thousand 274 manned crossings were removed. Commissioning of new line, doubling and gauge conversion increased to two thousand 226 kilometres in 2019-20.
AIR correspondent reports, Railways has taken several steps for Safety and Security of passengers. The nation witnessed zero passenger casualty in rail mishaps during 2019-20. CCTV cameras have been provided in coaches and Railway Stations for enhancing security of passengers. The Railways has also undertaken several measures to increase the speed of both passenger and freight trains. Railways is constructing more than three thousand kilometres of Dedicated Freight Corridor, which will enable freight trains to run at speed of 100 km per hour. Special attention is also given towards cleanliness and every endeavour is made to keep the stations and coaches including toilets in properly maintained and clean condition.
The punctuality of trains has also improved significantly by nearly 10 per cent over the last year. During the lockdown period, Railways has acted as a lifeline for the nation by carrying essential goods across the country. Railways operationalized over four thousand 230 Shramik Special trains across the country so far and transported more than 59 lakh passengers to their home states.
Railways distributed more than 85 lakh free meals and about one crore 25 lakh free water bottles to migrants travelling in Shramik Special Trains. In addition to Shramik Specials, Railways are running 15 pairs of special AC trains and Two hundred special trains.
