The National Girl Child Day is being observed today. The day is observed for focusing attention on ensuring equal opportunities to the girl child. Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted Desh Ki Beti and the accomplishments in various fields on National Girl Child Day. In a series of tweets today, Mr Modi said the Central Government has undertaken many initiatives that focus on empowering the girl child, including access to education, better healthcare and improving gender sensitivity. He said today is also a day to specially appreciate all those working towards empowering the girl child and ensuring she leads a life of dignity and opportunity.

Narendra Modi Government has given a lot of emphasis on the issue of girl child's education and declining Child Sex Ratio. In January 2015, Narendra Modi government had launched Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme with an objective to address the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio. Mr Modi had said that there is an urgent need to reduce the increasing imbalance in ratio amongst the girl and boy child for the betterment of the society.

Our correspondent reports that seeing the good progress and improving trend of sex ratio at birth in 161 implementing districts, Mr Modi launched the all India expansion of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao covering all 640 districts in 2018.

"A promising trend of improvement in Sex Ratio at Birth have been observed at National level. Sex Ratio at Birth has improved by 16 points from 918 in 2014-15 to 934 in 2019-20. Out of 640 districts covered under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, 422 districts have shown improvement in Sex Ratio at Birth. Some districts which had very low Sex Ratio at Birth in 2014-15 have shown huge improvement after implementation of the scheme. These districts include Mau in Uttar Pradesh, Karnal, Mahendergarh, Rewari in Haryana and Patiala in Punjab. Gross Enrolment Ratio of girls in the schools at secondary level has improved from 77.45 in 2014-15 to 81.32 in 2018-19. Centre is committed towards education and enhanced & active participation of the girl child under its flagship scheme Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. The Ministry of Education initiated the Samagra Siksha programme which is an Integrated Scheme for School Education under which various interventions have been targeted for Girls’ Education. In addition to this, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) have been sanctioned in Educationally Backward Blocks in the country to reduce gender gaps at all levels of school education and provide quality education to girls from disadvantaged groups. . Our Correspondent takes a look:

"Mahatma Gandhi said that, if you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate an entire family. Girls’ education goes beyond getting girls into school. It is also about ensuring that girls learn and feel safe while in school; have the opportunity to complete all levels of education acquiring the knowledge and skills to compete in the job market & society. The social campaign Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, actively persuaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi since he assumed office aims at bringing holistic changes, addressing the impediments in educating girl child. Under Samagra Shiksha, over 5 thousand 700 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas have been sanctioned in the country with enrollment of over 6 lakh girls. Various other interventions pushed by the Centre including opening of schools in the neighbourhood, provision of gender segregated toilets in schools, provision for self-defence training for the girls and free text-books to girls up to Class 8 have started bearing positive results. Even in the historic reforms brought about by the National Education Policy of 2020, a proposal to constitute a Gender Inclusion Fund targeting the development of girl child has been made.  The fund will focus on ensuring 100% enrollment of girls in schooling and will boost their participation rate in higher education. However, the positive change witnessed today is a welcome step in erasing the sordid tale of the past. More from our Mumbai correspondent:-

Various machineries of the Government have worked in tandem to bring about this change. There was a time when incidents of female foeticide were registered on a large number in this particular district. But now, people are overjoyed when a girl child is born. As a mark of honour, a procession of newborn girl's mother is also taken out in different villages of the district. Sweets are distributed as birth of a girl child is considered as a good omen. In Telangana, the quality of life of girl children in Kondayipally, a tiny village in Karimnagar district has completely changed after villagers drEw inspiration from the Central Government flagship programme, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. The villagers have set up a foundation called ‘Maa Oori Mahalakshmi’, meaning ‘Goddess of Wealth of Our Village’ after one of them took initiative for protecting girl children and ensuring their education in their village. More from our Hyderabad correspondent:-

"A few years ago, girl children in Konadayipally village of Karimnagar district in Telangana used to be treated as rejects. Even if they take birth, a pall of gloom used to engulf the family. Early marriages and sex determination was so common in the tiny village of about 300 families and nearly 1400 population. Enrolment of girls in schools was very low besides high dropouts. But setting up a Foundation called ‘Maa Oori Mahalakshmi’ means, ‘Goddess of Wealth of Our Village’ initiated by a youth R Srinivas has changed the mindset of the entire village. Srinivas migrated to gulf countries once and came back after a few years. He was moved by the plight of girls in his village as they faced rejection by their own parents, remained uneducated and not having social respect. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s beloved programme, Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao, Srinivas started the Foundation called ‘Maa Oori Mahalakshmi’ and soon his friends joined hands for the cause.  The trust soon became a boon for girl children of the village. It not only contributes 5 thousand rupees to each girl child born in the village but also partners her parents by way of contributing another 5 thousand rupees. This money will be kept in Pradhana Mantri Sukanya Samruddhi Yojana and the pass book will be handed over to her parents. The amount can be drawn only for the girl’s higher education or for her marriage. Now the villagers are literally considering the girl child being born as a boon for the family.

Srinivas and his friends through the foundation, so far could help 19 girl children in the village. Karimnagar District Collector K Shashank also joined hands with the Trust and helped four girls of the village. Now the villagers are making baby steps to make their girls empowered while others want to emulate the spirit of Konadayipally. With Sampath Kumar, Lakshmi, airnews, Hyderabad."
