Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana will be held on 21st October and the counting of votes will take place on 24th October. Announcing the poll schedule in New Delhi today, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said, the election process in both the states will be completed by 27th of October. Mr. Arora said, special security arrangements have been made in naxal affected areas.


"Special security arrangements will be done for LW affected areas for example, Garhchirolli and Bundiya in Maharashtra. Adequate CCTV Cameras and Web casting in polling stations in sensitive areas will be ensured. All the Police Checkposts across the state will be under 24 by 7 webcasting videographing for the entire periods of elections."


Maharashtra has 288 seats and Haryana has 90 seats. The five year term of the legislative assemblies of Haryana will expire on 2nd November.


"All the political parties in Haryana have welcomed the announcement of Assembly elections. The BJP, who  had swept all the 10 Lok Sabha seats in May, has fixed a target of winning  75 seats in the 90-Members Assembly.  In the outgoing Assembly, BJP has 48 MLAs . The Congress, which had reached out to the BSP for alliance  in the backdrop of breakup of BSP  with Jannayak Janata Party, had failed to lock any pre poll alliance with any party till now.  Ashwani Kumar Sharma, AIR News, Chandigarh"


The term of  Maharashtra assembly will be over on  9th November.


"In 2014, NDA sweeped the Maharashtra Assembly elections with the Bharatiya Janata Party winning 122 of the 260 seats that it contested for, and the Shiv Sena bagging 63 seats. It is not clear whether the BJP and Shiv Sena will join hands for the Assembly elections . The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar announced that the seat-sharing pact between the grand old party and his 20-year-old organisation has been finalised. As per the arrangement, 125  seats will be shared by Congress and NCP each while remaining will be left for allies to contest. Nivedita Bhorkar, Air News Mumbai"


The Model Code of conduct in these states has come into force with immediate effect. Notification will be issued on 27th of this month  and the last date for filing nominations will be 4th October. The scrutiny will be held on 5th October and last date for withdrawal of the nomination will be 7th of October.

The Election Commission has also announced bypolls to 64 assembly seats across 18 States and Samastipur Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar. The bypolls will be held on 21st October. Counting will take place on 24th of October. The assembly seats going to polls include 15 in Karnataka and 11 in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said the notification will be issued on the 23rd of this month.

BJP President Amit Shah today called upon party workers of Maharashtra and Haryana to bring the achievements of their governments to the people and form governments again with a strong majority. Welcoming the announcement of Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana, Mr Shah said the BJP-led governments have taken the States to new heights of development and good governance in the last five years. In a series of tweets, Mr Shah also called upon all the voters of Maharashtra and Haryana, especially the youth, to vote in large numbers.

Congress today said the party is fully prepared to contest the Assembly polls in Maharashtra and Haryana. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said the party will raise pro-people issues in the elections, especially concerning  farmers and the youth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach Houston in the United States late tonight from Frankfurt. He is expected to land in the US city in the State of Texas at around 2:00 AM Indian Standard Time. His first engagement in Houstin will be a Round Table Meeting with top US CEOs from energy sector. Later, the Indian community representatives are expected to meet Mr Modi.


The Prime Minister will address the Indian community at Howdy Modi event jointly with US President Donald Trump at NRG Stadium in Houston tomorrow. The address will be followed by a community reception.


Mr Modi will leave for New York on 22nd September. He will attend the Climate Action Summit at the UN Headquarters on 23rd September. The Prime Minister will address a high level meeting on Universal Health Coverage. Mr Modi has convened a meeting of the leaders of India-Pacific Islands on 24th September. 


The Prime Minister will inaugurate Gandhi Solar Park at the UN headquarters and Gandhi Peace Garden. Bill and Melinda Gates' Foundation's Global Goalkeeper's Award will be presented to the Prime Minister Modi for his leadership role in Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. 


On 25th September, Mr Modi will deliver the keynote address at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum.


The Prime Minister will address the UN General Assembly session between 10 and 11am New York time on 27th September. He will return to New Delhi on 28th September.

Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO, Chairman K Sivan has said the Chandrayaan-2 mission has achieved 98 per cent of its objectives. He said the orbiter, with eight scientific instruments, is doing well and performing scheduled scientific experiments.


Talking to reporters in Bhubaneswar, Odisha today, Mr Sivan said, a national-level committee comprising academicians and ISRO experts are analysing the cause of the communication loss with Vikram. Mr Sivan said ISRO is focusing on space mission, Gaganyaan by 2020.


"The Chandrayaan-2 orbitery is doing very well and we had eight scientific instruments in the orbiter. And the each instrument is doing exactly whatever we want. Now the Gaganyaan  is having the next highest priority."


The ISRO chairman said the country is moving ahead to meet its target of sending man to space by December 2021.

 IT and Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said postal accounts will be linked with Aadhaar for greater transparency. He was speaking after inaugurating Bihar's first and the country's tenth Aadhaar Seva Kendra in Patna today. He said on an average, one thousand Aadhaar cards will be made at this centre and other facilities will also be available. Mr Prasad said 114 such Kendra will soon be  operational in 53 cities in the country. The Minister also inaugurated the country's second and Bihar's first women post office in Patna. Mr. Prasad announced that women post offices will be opened in every postal division of the country.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire agreement and resorted to indiscriminate and unprovoked firing in border district of Rajouri today. According to defence spokesperson, Pakistani troops targeted Indian forward posts and civilian areas in Balakote in Mendhar sector of the district at around 4:15 PM. They fired small arms and resorted to shelling with mortars. However, Indian troops gave a befitting reply. Earlier, this morning, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire in Shahpur and Kerni sectors in Poonch district.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has held long discussions on cross-border terrorism with the top Finnish leadership. The discussions were held amid Pakistan's bid to peddle fabricated stories on Kashmir after India revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status. The External Affairs Minister is on a three-day visit to Finland, the current chair of the European Union that supported India on the Kashmir issue.


Mr Jaishankar yesterday held talks with Prime Minister Antti Rinne and his Finnish counterpart Pekka Haavisto in Helsinki on a broad spectrum of bilateral relations.

In one of the biggest haul of smuggled narcotics from mid-sea off the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Indian Coast Guard has seized three hundred crore rupees worth ketamine. A statement from the Coast Guard released in Chennai today says, 1,160 kilogram ketamine has been confiscated from a Myanmarese ship on Thursday night.

The United States has announced that it was sending military reinforcements to the Gulf region following attacks on Saudi oil facilities that it attributes to Iran. Earlier, President Donald Trump ordered new sanctions on Tehran. He said, the sanctions were the toughest-ever against another country, but indicated he did not plan a military strike, calling restraint a sign of strength. The attacks, which knocked out half of Saudi Arabia's oil production, have been claimed by Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels, but Washington has pointed its finger at Tehran, condemning the strikes as an "act of war."

Ace Indian boxer Amit Panghal settled for a silver at the AIBA Men's World Boxing Championships at Ekaterniburg in Russia today. He lost to Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan in flyweight (52 kg) category, by a unanimous decision from the judges. Amit has already secured a berth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

India's star wrestler Deepak Punia has reached the final of World Wrestling Championships at Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan. He defeated his semi-final opponent Stefan Reichmuth of Switzerland 8-2 today to move into the gold-medal match. The reigning junior world champion Punia will now wrestle against legendary Hassan Yazdani of Iran in the 86-kg category final tomorrow. With this win he became the fourth Indian wrestler to secure a berth for the Tokyo Olympics next year.

In Cricket, India will play South Africa in the third and final T20 match at Bengaluru tomorrow. The game will begin at 7 p.m. After a  comprehensive seven-wicket victory in the second T20 at Mohali on Wednesday, India is seeking a 2-0 series verdict before the Test series gets underway from 2nd of next month.The first T20 at Dharamsala last Sunday was a washout.
