Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting in New Delhi today with the Presidents of all political parties having representation in Parliament on the issue of One Nation One Election.


Briefing media persons after the meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, Prime Minister Modi will form a committee to look into the various aspects of the One Nation One Election in the country. The committee will submit its report within a time frame. Mr Singh said, in the meeting, most of the political parties supported the idea of One Nation One Election.


"Most of the members supported one nation one election issue in the meeting. Only CPI and CPI (M) expressed some difference opinion but they also did not oppose one nation one election issue directly. However, they expressed apprehension that how it will be implemented. Prime Minister in his address announced that a committee will be constituted which will look in all the aspects of the issue and give its recommendations within stipulated period." 


Mr Singh said, 40 political parties were invited for the meeting today, out of which 21 attended and three parties including AIADMK sent their views.


The Defence Minister said, besides One Nation One Election, the meeting also discussed ways to improve the productivity of Parliament and building a New India in the 75th year of Independence in 2022. The discussion was also held on programmes related to the celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi's 150 birth anniversary and development of aspirational districts. Mr Singh said, all parties agreed to enhance the productivity of Parliament and said, there should be an atmosphere of debate and deliberations on the concerned issues in both the Houses.


The Minister said, many parties emphasised on the need to make new generations aware about the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and celebrations of 150th birth anniversary is an opportunity to achieve it. He said, there was a positive approach among the parties about development of aspirational districts and the Prime Minister also urged the States to bring 10 per cent of the total blocks at the level of State average. The Prime Minister also spoke about water management  saying that it is a challenge and stressed on conservation of water.

NDA nominee and BJP MP Om Birla has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. All major political parties including Congress, DMK, TMC, BJD, YSR Congress, JD(U) and Shiv Sena supported the motion moved by the Leader of the House and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Later, Pro-tem speaker Dr. Virendra Kumar declared the BJP MP from Kota as the Lok Sabha Speaker.


Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Modi congratulated the newly elected Speaker. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Mr Birla will preside over the proceedings of the House in exceptional manner.


In his speech, the new Speaker thanked all the members of the House for reposing faith in him. He said, the Chair of the Speaker should be impartial and assured all the members to give fair opportunities to them.


Earlier leaders of all the political parties congratulated Mr Birla for being chosen as the Speaker.


"An  agriculturalist and social worker,  Om Birla  started his  political journey as a student leader . Later, he elected as MLA for three consecutive terms for Rajasthan Assembly  in 2003, 2008 and 2013. He won his first Lok Sabha election in 2014 and was again elected this year from Rajasthan's Kota Lok Sabha seat. 56 year old, Mr Birla defeated Congress'  Ramnarayan Meena with a margin of over 2.5 lakh votes in the recently-concluded general election. President Ram Nath Kovind will address the joint sitting of both the houses of Parliament tomorrow. He will deliver the address at the Central Hall of Parliament.


The first session of the 17th Lok Sabha began on Monday in which the newly elected members took oath and election of the Speaker was held.


The Rajya Sabha will begin its proceedings from tomorrow after the address of the President.


The Parliament session will continue till 26th of July and the General Budget will be presented on 4th of next month.

The Supreme Court today sought a response from the Election Commission by 24th of this month on a plea of the Gujarat Congress, challenging the poll panel's decision to hold separate bypolls for two Rajya Sabha seats in the state. A vacation bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant listed the matter for hearing on June 25.


The Election Commission had said in a statement on 15th of this month that vacancies for by-polls to all legislatures are considered as separate vacancies and separate polls are held though they could be held on the same day and at the same time.

The government has signed agreements with Bangladesh and South Korea, under which DD India will be available in those countries, while their state channels will be shown on Doordarshan Free Dish.


An official release said, BTV World, a channel owned by Bangladesh TV, will be available on the Doordarshan Free Dish for the viewers in India. The arrangement is a result of an MoU signed between Prasar Bharati and Bangladesh TV last month.


A proposal of Prasar Bharati has also been approved by the government for making available the KBS World, a 24x7 English channel of South Korean government on the DD Free Dish for Indian viewers.


Briefing media in New Delhi this afternoon, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said, the decision will build up bilateral relationship.


"It's a more robust cultural in the exchange. Prime MInister Narendra Modi's Look East policy is working. So this mutual cooperation with neighboring countries is very important and such type of engagements help build up mutual relationship."

In Bihar, 18 additional doctors from Patna, Nalanda and Darbhanga Medical College Hospitals today joined in the treatment of Encephalitis affected children at Sri Krishna Medical College Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur.


Talking to AIR, SKMCH Superintendent Dr. Sunil Shahi said, a central team of five doctors and experts is arriving tonight to join the clinical team. Dr. Shahi said, now there is no shortage of doctors and administration is doing its best to save the lives of children.


He said, so far 142 children have been discharged after recuperation. Sweltering heat and humidity in Muzaffarpur and adjoining area is aggravating the situation. Today 27 new patients were admitted to the hospital.


"In Muzaffarpur a massive awareness and ORS distribution programme has been launched in all 16 blocks. Doctors and health officials with nodal officer and magistrates have been deployed to ensure every household is touched. District administration has cancelled leaves of all government servants to ensure success of the drive. A central team of experts of vector borne diseases stationed in Muzaffarpur is visiting Mushari block where maximum 14 deaths have been reported.  Experts of state team are also knocking door to door to collect data of socio economic aspects of affected families. Northern Army commander Lt Gen Ranbir Singh along with White Knight Corps commander Lt Gen Paramjit Singh, visited forward bases and posts in Akhnoor and Reasi sectors of Jammu division today. During the visit, the Army Commander was briefed about the current operational situation, prevailing security scenario and the preparedness in dealing with any intrusion and infiltration from across the border. He was also briefed on measures being taken to ensure a safe and conducive environment for the people taking part in the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.

Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana is proving to be a boon for people, especially the poor. Under the scheme, a number of Jan-Aushadhi  outlets have been opened in various districts of the country to make quality medicines available to all at affordable prices.


"A beneficiary of the scheme, ANBAZHAGAN of  puducherry said, "For the last 2 years I am purchasing this generic medicines from the Jan Aushadhi kendras. Rate wise it is very much cheap. In outside medical shops if we purchase 500 rupees medicines, the same is available for just 50 to 100 rupees in Jan Aushadhi  kendras. Previously I found much financial difficulty in purchasing medicines, but now it is not like that.  my medical expenses comes down one third now."

In Goa, preparations are underway for the celebration of International Yoga Day on Friday. Briefing media in Panaji today, Goa Urban Development Minister Milind Naik said, the main function will be held at Taleigao Community Centre near the state capital. Our correspondent has more to say:


"The health department in association with other government departments has organised programmes at all 33 public health centres in the state. Besides the state-level programme in Panaji, Miramar-based Goa Science Centre will celebrate International Yoga Day which will feature a poster exhibition on asanas. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met visiting Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev in New Delhi today and discussed ways to strengthen ties between the two nations. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, the two leaders discussed various aspects of India-Russia relationship including the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Vladivostok for the Eastern Economic Forum in September this year.

Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup. He has been replaced by young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. The 33 year old failed to make enough recovery in a fresh assessment of his thumb fracture.


Dhawan was injured during India's match against Australia on 9th of this month in London. He was initially ruled out of three games -- against Pakistan on 16th June, Afghanistan on 22nd and the West Indies on the 27th of this month.

In the ICC Cricket World Cup, chasing the victory target of 242 runs set by South Africa, New Zealand were 41 for 1 in 9 overs at Birmingham, when reports last came in.


Earlier, Put into bat, Proteas made 241 for the loss of six wickets in 49 overs this evening. 


New Zealand won the toss and elected to field. The toss was delayed due to a wet outfield and the match has been reduced to 49-over per side due to rain.

Asian Champion PU Chitra won the gold in women's 1500 metres at the Folksam Grand Prix Athletics in Sweden. She finished ahead of former Commonwealth Games champion Mercy Cherono of Kenya yesterday. Chitra had won the gold at the Asian Championships in Doha in April. Asian Games gold medallist Jinson Johnson won the silver in the men's 1500 metres.
