Polling for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections is underway. Voting, in this phase, is taking place for 95 constituencies, spread over 11 States and one Union Territory. Polling is being held for 38 seats in Tamil Nadu, 14 in Karnataka, 10 in Maharashtra, eight in Uttar Pradesh, five each in Assam, Bihar and Odisha, 3 each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, two in Jammu and Kashmir and one each in Manipur and Puducherry.

In Tamil Nadu, 30.62 per cent voting was recorded till 11 AM for 38 Lok Sabha and 18 Assembly seats. Polling will go on till 6 PM in all constituencies except in Madurai where electors can vote till 8 PM as a two-hour extension has been given in view of the famous Kallazhagar festival there.

In Odisha, around 7 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the first two hours of polling in five Lok Sabha and 35 assembly constituencies.

In Karnataka, a voter turnout of 20.62 per cent was reported from 14 parliamentary constituencies till 1 PM. Our correspondent has more:

"Apart from minor clashes the overall situation in Karnataka is normal in 30,164 polling booths in the south of the state. Long queues are seen in some polling booths with the old and physically challenged being given priority to vote. There are 6012 polling booths that are considered sensitive where monitoring is done with the help of micro observers, web cameras and videographers. Sudhindra, AIR news, Bengaluru."

In Maharashtra, an average of 21.47 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 11 AM in 10 constituencies where polling is underway in the second phase.

In Uttar Pradesh, an overall 24.31 percent polling was recorded in eight parliamentary constituencies till 11 AM. These constituencies are Nagina, Amroha, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Hathras, Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura and Agra.

In West Bengal, more than 33 percent polling was recorded till 12 noon in three parliamentary constituencies of Jalpaiguri, Raigunj and Darjeeling. Our correspondent has filed this report:

"Barring few stray incidents polling in Darjeeling is bye and large peaceful. The Election Commission has removed a presiding officer of a polling booth in Darjeeling for negligence of duties. However, voting in tea garden areas in the hills is peaceful so far. Arijit Chakraborty, AIR News, kolkata."

In Chhattisgarh, around 47.02 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 1 PM in three Lok Sabha constituencies of Kanker, Rajnandgaon and Mahasamund. A massive security blanket of around 60,000 personnel and drones has been thrown around the three constituencies because of Naxal presence.

In Bihar, 31.23 percent polling was recorded till 1 PM in five constituencies of Katihar, Kishanganj, Purnea, Bhagalpur and Banka. Our correspondent has the details:

Peaceful voting is underway at all polling stations. More than 86 Lakh voters are eligible in this phase and they will decide political future of 68 candidates. Janta Dal United is contesting all five seats in this phase. In Kishanganj Lok Sabha seat the contest is appearing to be triangular. Former Union Minister Tarique Anwar and former member of parliament Uday Singh alias Pappu Singh from Congress, Putul Kumari Independent and former State Minister Dulachandra Goswami are prominent candidates of this phase. In Assam, an average 46.42 percent voter turnout was recorded till 1 PM.

In Manipur, about 49.7 percent polling was recorded in the Inner-Manipur Parliamentary Constituency till 1 PM.

In Jammu and Kashmir, about 18 percent votes were cast in two  Parliamentary Constituencies of Udhampur and Srinagar till 11 AM. Our correspondent reports that polling in both the constituencies is progressing peacefully.

"Right from the morning long queues of people were seen on almost all the polling booths with first time voters eager to cast their votes at the earliest. At some stations women voters outnumbered the male voters. Adequate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure free, fair and transparent polls. Police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in strength in and around polling stations in all the six  districts - Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi and  Ramban -- of the constituency. The Udhampur Parliamentary constituency has 16,85,779 electors for whom 2,710 poling stations have been set up by the Election Commission of India. R K Raina, Air News, Jammu."

Filing of nominations for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections will conclude this evening. Fifty constituencies spread over seven states will go to polls on May 6. Monday is the last date for withdrawal of candidature.

In Bihar , till now 88 candidates have filed the nomination papers. In Uttar Pradesh, many high profile candidates, including Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav, are filing their papers today. SP-BSP alliance candidate Poonam Sinha will file her nominations in Lucknow. BJP leader Maneka Gandhi is filing her papers from Sultanpur constituency.

Prime Minister and senior BJP leader Narendra Modi has said that his government managed to contain terrorism to only two-and-a-half districts in Jammu and Kashmir and no bomb blast took place elsewhere in the country in last five years. Addressing a rally at Amreli in Gujarat today, Mr Modi said, what he learnt as Gujarat Chief Minister helped him during the long Doklam standoff with China in 2017. He said, had the Sardar Sarovar project been completed 40 years ago, Gujarat would have been much better.

Mr.Modi said that the world’s tallest statue of Sardar Patel has been visited by more than 12 lakh people, but not a single Congress leader has visited the statue so far. Here is a report from our correspondent:

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi is campaigning in his home state and addressed four public meetings in two days. BJP President Amit Shah also scheduled to address public meetings in Chhota Udepur and Valsad. Congress President Rahul Gandhi is on a two-days visit to Gujarat from today. He is scheduled to address public meetings in Kutch, Saurashtra and South Gujarat. Technocrat Dr. Sam Pitroda also in Ahmedabad for Congress campaign. Yogesh Pandya, AIR News, Ahmedabad." 

The Prime Minister will also address public meetings at Bagalkot and Chikkodi in Karnataka and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala today.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi addressed rallies at Badaun in Uttar Pradesh. Our Lucknow correspondent is giving details of campaigning in Uttar Pradesh:

"Congress President Rahul Gandhi along with party’s General Secretary Jyotiraditya Scindhia addressed a rally in Myao area of Badaun district where polling will be in third phase. In his speech Rahul attacked PM Modi. BJP leaders Keshav Maurya, Dinesh Sharma, Mahendra Nath Pandey and Vinay Katiyar are also scheduled to address rallies in different cities of State. Many high profile leaders filed their nominations today and held road shows which includes Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav from Azamgarh, Menaka Gandhi from Sultanpur, Poonam Sinha and Acharya Pramod Krishnam from Lucknow. Civil Aviation Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola today held meeting with airport  authorities to coordinate and address any emerging issues on capacity, slots and passenger convenience, following cessation of the Jet Airways flights. He will also hold a meeting with the airlines later in the day.

The meeting is being held after the Civil Aviation Ministry said, the Directorate General Civil Aviation and other regulators are monitoring the situation to ensure that all existing rules regarding refunds, cancellations and alternate bookings are followed strictly. It said, any passenger complaints should be promptly reported to the Air-Sewa portal or mobile app and the Ministry will follow up immediately.

In Chhattisgarh, two Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Dantewada district of Bastar division today. The encounter took place at the jungles of Duvalikarka in Kuakonda area. Police recovered two rifles from the spot.

According to the police officials, the killed Maoists were involved in the incident in which BJP MLA Bheema Mandavi and four security personnel were killed in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on 09th of April. One of the killed Maoists had a reward of five lakh rupees on his head.

In Pakistan, unidentified gunmen shot dead at least 14 passengers after forcing them to disembark from a bus on a highway in Balochistan province today. The motive behind the killings and the identity of the victims are yet to be ascertained.

Twenty-nine German tourists were killed and 21 injured after a bus crashed on the Portuguese island of Madeira yesterday. The bus had spun off the road before crashing into a house at the bottom of a slope.
