Campaigning has intensified for second phase of Lok Sabha elections to be held on Thursday. 97 constituencies, spread over 13 States and Union Territories, will go to polls in this phase.

Top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP Chief Amit Shah, Congress President Rahul Gandhi and BSP Chief Mayawati, are holding public meetings to garner support for their candidates.

Senior BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, the NDA government is committed to the development of all people. Addressing Vijay Sankalp rally at Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh this afternoon, he said, government schemes are giving benefits to all under the principle of Sabka Saath sabka Vikas without any discrimination. Mr Modi said, the NDA government is committed to eradicate terrorism, corruption and poverty while the opposition parties want to remove him.

Applauding Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the Prime Minister said that Babasaheb was a great economist, writer and social reformer.

"हमने बाबा साहेब के बताए रास्ते पर तो काम किया ही है। उनको देश के इतिहास में वो सम्मान देने का प्रयास भी किया है, जिसके बाबा साहेब हकदार थे। बाबा साहेब से जुड़े पांच स्थानों को हमारी सरकार ने पंच तीर्थ के रूप में विकसित करने का पूरा प्रयास किया है।"

The Prime Minister said, it is due to the strength of Babasaheb's Constitution that a man from a deprived and exploited class is President, a man from a farmer's family is Vice President and a chaiwala is the PM.

Addressing a rally in Moradabad city of the state this evening, The Prime Minister said that if BJP comes to power again there will be no limit of 5 acres in the Kisan Saubhagya scheme. Mr Modi said, many schemes will be expanded and government will provide pension to all farmers and small scale sector employees who have completed age of 60 years.

 Mr Modi said that he knows that sugar mills are delaying the payment of cane farmers of the region and assured that every single rupee of dues will be given to farmers back. He said that Rashtriya Vyapari Ayog will be constituted to solve problems of business community and Small scale business entrepreneurs will get 50 lakh rupees loan without any guarantee.

On the issue of triple talaq, the Prime Minister said that the bill in this regard will again be presented in parliament if BJP comes to power again.

Earlier, at a rally in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Modi said BJP is committed to settle Kashmiri Pandits at their native places in Kashmir and the work has started in this direction.


Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today held a roadshow at Silchar in Assam. This was her first campaign outside Uttar Pradesh for the General Elections. She was campaigning for the party candidate from the Silchar constituency. Addressing people during the roadshow, Priyanka said, Congress granted special status to Assam but the BJP removed it after assuming power. She said, there are many issues in Silchar that have not been solved by this government.


Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has said, the SP-BSP -RLD alliance has been formed to bring great transformation in the country. Speaking at an election rally in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, he criticised policies of central and state government and said that his government had worked for overall development of the people. He said, Dalits, farmers and poor of the country are still waiting for the justice even after so many years of independence.

"बहुत अफसोस है कि आजादी के इतने दिनों बाद भी दलित समाज को और गरीब किसान गांव में रहने लोगों को जो सम्मान मिल जाना चाहिए था वो सम्मान नहीं मिल पा रहा है। कानून से जो न्याय मिल जाना चाहिए था वो अभी भी न्याय नहीं मिल पा रहा है। सहारनपुर के बाद बदायुं के कार्यक्रम ने और गठबंधन का, जनता का और तमाम वो जो लोग गरीब किसान हैं उनका मनोबल बढ़ाने का काम किया है।"


BSP chief Mayawati today said that both the Congress and the BJP have misused the CBI and ED to drag Opposition parties into false cases. Addressing a public meeting in Janjgir-Champa district in Chhattisgarh, Mayawati questioned the Congress over non-implementation of its proposed NYAY scheme in the party-ruled states including Chhattisgarh.

The BSP chief said, if voted to power, a government of the SP and the BSP would provide work to each and every person, and ensure generation of jobs in government and private sectors.


In Maharashtra, the state Election Commission has ordered re-polling in four polling centers in Naxal-infested Gadchiroli- Chimur Loksabha constituency of the state. According to EC official, voting will be held tomorrow from 7 am to 3 pm at Gadchiroli-Chimur's smaller village localities including Watali, Garadewada, Garadewada (Pusosoti) and Garadewada (Wangeturi).

An encounter took place between security forces and Naxals in Gadchiroli when a polling party was returning on polling day on Thursday evening.

The Naxal-affected district also witnessed IED blasts at two other places on 11th April.


In Karnataka, a total of 241 candidates are in the fray for the second phase of Lok Sabha polls. Our correspondent has the details.

"The election fever has virtually hit the south of Karnataka where the campaign will end on Tuesday evening. In Bengaluru candidates begin their campaign as early as 7 am. Public places like Parks, bus stands, metro stations, gyms and junctions are being visited by the candidates. Gatherings are organised in schools, colleges, malls and marriage halls where the candidates interact with the public. Important leaders who campaigned today are Defence Minister Nirmala Sitaraman who also interacted with academicians and thinkers. Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy campaigned in Mandya, Yeddyurappa took up road show in Bengaluru south constituency, Deve Gowda addressed a public rally in Chickmagalur, Siddaramaiah campaigned in Mysuru. Opposition parties today alleged that Election Commission is not doing enough to address the issue of EVM malfunctioning during the polls. At a joint press conference following opposition parties meeting in New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said the impartiality of the Election Commission is at stake. Mr Naidu demanded that fifty per cent of the VVPAT should be counted. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister said, opposition parties have come together to raise the issue to protect democratic spirit in the country.

"We are raising doubts about VVPATs and also on EVMs for last so many days. Some people are saying we are not in a position to face election. Andhera Pradesh election is over. I am working for the country. I am working for transparency, save democracy, save constitution. And ultimately, for the last so many days, we are all together fighting irrespective of our political parties' affiliation."

Corroborating Mr Naidu's views, Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi, said many questions were raised after the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on EVMs. He also said that the names of lakhs of voters are d online without physical verification. He said, opposition parties will approach Supreme Court and carry out a nationwide campaign on the issue of alleged discrepancies in EVMs.

CPI General Secretary Sudhakar Reddy, Delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPI(M) leader Nilotpal Basu, leaders from JD(S), Samajwadi party were also present.

BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha said, while sensing their defeat in the Lok Sabh polls, opposition parties are making baseless charges and questioning the poll panel.

"विपक्षी दलों की  हताशा और चुनाव हारने का जो बौखलाहट है वो साफ दिखाई पड़ रही है और अपनी हार के लिए बहाने  ढूंढने  शुरू कर  दिए हैं और उनकी हार का ठीकरा वो इलेक्शन कमीशन पर और ईवीएम पर फोड़ने का नाटक कर रहे हैं।"


The BSP today released one more list of 16 candidates for the Lok Sabha polls. Former party MP Bhishma Shankar has been again fielded from Santkabir Nagar constituency and Rangnath Mishra from Bhadohi seat. Ashok Kumar Tripathi will contest from Pratapgarh while Aftab Alam from Domariyaganj constituency.


The BJP today released another list of six candidates for general elections. The Party has fielded Arvind Sharma from Rohtak and Brijendra Singh from Hisar Lok Sabha seat in Haryana. Bishnu Datt Sharma has been given ticket from Khajuraho Parliamentary constituency in Madhya Pradesh.


President Ram Nath Kovind today led the nation in paying homage to architect of the Indian Constitution Dr BR Ambedkar on his 128th birth anniversary. Mr Kovind paid floral tributes at the statue of Dr Ambedkar at the Parliament House Lawns in New Delhi.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawarchand Gehlot were among the dignitaries who also paid tributes to Dr Ambedkar.

In his message, President Ram Nath Kovind said, Dr Ambedkar was an outstanding leader of the country's freedom struggle and a staunch crusader for the rights of the downtrodden.

Rich tribute were paid to the dalit icon in various parts of the country. Our Mumbai correspondent has filed this report.

"Quiz competitions, essay writings and other educational activities were organised for children at different places to pay rich tributes to Dr. Ambedkar who propagated education in a big way for social engineering of the backward class community. People thronged Chaityabhoomi in Mumbai and DikshaBhoomi in Nagpur to pay obeisance to Babasaheb. At various alleys and by-lanes of Mumbai the atmosphere reverberated with the songs remembering the Dalit icon. The National Investigation Agency, NIA today arrested the fifth accused Irshad Ahmad Reshi in connection with a terror attack on the CRPF group in 2017 at Lethpora village in Pulwama district of Jammu & Kashmir. The attack was carried out by three terrorists belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammad. Five CRPF personnel were martyred in the attack and all the three terrorists were killed in the encounter.

In IPL Cricket, table toppers Chennai Super Kings defeated second placed Kolkata Knight Riders by 5 wickets in the first match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata today. Put into bat, Kolkata scored 161 for 8 in the stipulated 20 overs. Chennai overhauled the score by losing 5 wickets.

The second match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals is now underway at Hyderabad. Sunrisers won the toss and elected to field. Put into bat, Delhi Capitals were  121 for 3  in 15 overs when reports last came in.
