  • First phase of Parliamentary and four State Assemblies elections passed off peacefully barring few minor incidents.

  • Tripura records highest voter turnout with 81.8 percent followed by West Bengal 81 percent.

  • DRDO Chariman says, Mission Shakti is an exemplary effort reflecting India's indigenous defence technology.

  • In Sudan, army arrests President Omar al- Bashir after several months of protests against him.

Polling was peaceful in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in 91 constituencies spread over 18 states and two union territories. Briefing media in New Delhi this evening, Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha said, few untoward incidents were reported.

"The elections were concluded in a peaceful manner barring few spoardic incidents. I would like to take opportunity to thank millions of voters who came forward to vote despite their numeral diffilculties, especially the persons of disability. Let me also convey my appreciation for lackhs of polling officials for carrying sout  the task of conduction elections."

Tripura recorded highest 81.8 per cent voting followed by West Bengal 81 per cent. Manipur recorded 78.2 per cent.

The Commission expressed happiness that more women came out in large numbers for voting. In all polling booths EVMs were used along with VVPATs. The Commission said, 15 cases of damage of EVMs were reported today. It said, six lakh voters were added to electoral rolls last week and 1.4 lakh in it are newly-eligible voters. The Poll Body said, 570 model code references received by it from various Government departments so far, of which 547 were responded to in shortest possible time.

In Nagaland 78 per cent polling was recorded.

"Special features today’s polling include Pink Booths which were managed by 289 All Women Polling team, Polling Booth manned by Persons with Disabilities and Selfie Point for the voters.  For the first time in Nagaland, Braille ballot papers were also provided in all polling stations to facilitate physically challenged people to exercise their vote. Assam and Odisha recored 68 per cent each, Mizoram 60 per cent. In Sikkim 69 per cent polling was recorded. 

"Political fate of 150 candidates including 9 independents  for Assembly  seats, and for  lone Lok Sabha seat,electoral fortune of  11 candidates including two independents have been  sealed in the EVMs. Besides three Ministers, political fate of Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling and opposition leader Kunga Nima Lepcha  has also been locked  in EVMs. Mr. Chamling is seeking re-election for the sixth consecutive times. State BJP President D.B.Chauhan and working President of Hamro Sikkim Party Bhaichung Bhutia are also in the race. With K K Lal's report from Gangtok Ashok for AIR News."

Over 72 per cent polling was recorded in Jammu and in Baramulla it was just over 35 per cent.

Eight seats of Uttar Pradesh recorded 63.7 per cent polling.

"There are total 96 contestants including 10 women candidates in fray . The key candidates whose political fate was locked in EVM machines  include three union minister Gen VK Singh, Dr Mahesh Sharma, Satyapal Singh, RLD president Ajit Singh , former union minister Sanjev Baliyan, and Former UP minister  Nasimuddin Siddique. Sixteen thousand 635 polling booths were erected on six thousand 575 polling centers for more than one crore 53 lakh voters. MS Yadav AIR News Lucknow"

In Maharashtra 56 per cent voting took place.

Bihar recorded 50 per cent polling while in Arunachal Pradesh voter turnout was 66 per cent.

Uttarakhand recorded 57.85 per cent polling.

In Chhattisgarh 56 per cent polling was recorded.

 "The people of Maoist affected tribal Bastar region of Chhattisgarh today gave a strong message to the undemocratic forces by choosing ballet over the bullet. Bastar is one of the few constituencies where women voter outnumbered men. Today the voters of Bastar region, specially, female voters showed great enthusiasm in exercising their franchise. Maoists made a couple of attempts to disrupt the polling process. They triggered an IED blast and opened fire at polling parties while the parties were returning after the polling. But, these incidents did not hamper the polling process. After the first phase of election in Chhattisgarh, the electoral fate of seven candidates of Bastar constituency were sealed in EVMs today. In Telangana, 60.57 per cent voting was recorded.

"It was amazing to see  the number of  first time and fresh voters  casting  their votes.  Even very old women also were seen this time participating in elections. All the important leaders like, N. Chandrababu Naidu, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, and other prominent leaders  cast their votes in the forenoon itself.  With today's  Polling for the 175 assembly constituencies and 25 Lok Sabha segments across Andhra Pradesh came to an end in a Single phase , with Dr. G.Kondala Rao, from, Vijayawada.s, Ankush Vads for air news."

In Meghalaya it was 67.16 per cent. Andaman and Nicobar recorded nearly 80 per cent.

Simultaneous voting also took place to 175-member Andhra Pradesh Assembly, 32-seat Sikkim Assembly, 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly and for 28 of 147 Assembly seats in Odisha.

All 25 parliamentary constituencies of Andhra Pradesh, 17 of Telangana, 8 in Uttar Pradesh, seven in Maharashtra, five each of Assam and Uttarakhand, four each in Bihar and Odisha, 2 each of Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, and one each of Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep went to polls in this phase.


Campaigning for the remaining phases of Lok Sabha election has gained momentum, with senior leaders of various political parties  addressing multiple rallies across the country.

Prime Minister and senior BJP leader Narendra Modi said that a slew of development measures have been undertaken in Assam in the last 5 years. Addressing  election rallies at Kamalpur and Silchar, Mr. Modi said that people of Assam have to decide what sort of developments they need.

Mr. Modi said, there should not be any compromise with terrorists and naxals.

Earlier, addressing a rally at Bhagalpur in Bihar, the Prime Minister said that if NDA government is voted to power he will constitute a National Trade Commission for the welfare of the small businessmen.

BJP President Amit Shah has assured the Gorkha community in Darjeeling hills that the Narendra Modi led government at the Centre is standing by them. Speaking at a rally in Kalimpong in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. He said, State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead the masses on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Addressing an election rally in Darjeeling Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, her government will not allow initiation of NRC in West Bengal. Ms Banerjee said TMC government has implemented a number of projects and schemes for progress and welfare of hill people and tea garden workers in North Bengal.

Leaders of other parties also held election rallies across the state.


In Uttar Pradesh, UPA chairperson and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination papers for the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat today.

BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani also filed her nomination from Amethi Lok Sabha seat today.


These constituencies will go to polls on 6th May in the fifth phase of General elections.


Home Ministry today said that there was no breach in security of Congress President Rahul Gandhi in Amethi yesterday. The Ministry said, it has not received any letter regarding this but as soon as it's  attention was drawn to reports of alleged breach in security, the Director, SPG  was asked to verify the factual position. The SPG has informed that they have gone through the Video Clipping of the incident very closely and the green light shown in the clipping was found to be that of a mobile phone used by the Congress Party photographer, who was videographing the impromptu press interaction of Mr Gandhi near the Collectorate. 

The media reports had said that there was a green light being pointed at Mr. Gandhi in Amethi yesterday. 

Meanwhile, Congress has denied writing any letter to Home Ministry over on the issue. Earlier, media reports had surfaced saying Congress has expressed concern over breach in the security of the Party President and possible endangerment of his life.


Chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation, DRDO, Dr G Satheesh Reddy has said that Mission Shakti is an exemplary effort reflecting india's indigenous defence technology. Speaking on DRDO's achievements in Defence Indigenization at a lecture in Vivekananda International Foundation in New Delhi this evening, Mr Reddy said, a continuous process is required to achieve progress in indigenous defence production in the country. He said, the Ballistic Missile Development, BMD systems are pursued by very few countries in the world and India is one amongst them.


Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman today praised the Indian Air Force for its flawless execution of the Balakot strikes and subsequent thwarting of the Pakistani response. She said, the IAF has proved its mettle in Exercise Gagan Shakti 2018 and Vayu Shakti 2019. Speaking at the first bi-annual Air Force Commanders' conference, she complimented the IAF and its air warriors for achieving and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism in the service of the nation.


In Sudan, the army ousted and arrested President Omar al-Bashir today. Announcing this on state television, Defence Minister Awad Ibnouf  said, the President has been removed from power and detained by the army. He also said, a three-month state of emergency was being put in place. He said, Sudan's constitution was being suspended, border crossings were being closed until further notice and airspace was being closed for 24 hours. Awad Ibn Ouf said, the army had decided to oversee a two-year transitional period followed by elections.

Protests against Mr Bashir, who has governed Sudan since 1989, have been underway for several months.


In Badminton, P.V. Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma entered the quarterfinals of Singapore Open today. 

P.V. Sindhu advanced to the women's singles quarterfinals with a straight games win over Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark 21-13, 21-19. Sindhu will next face China's Cai Yanyan in the quarterfinal tomorrow.  Saina Nehwal defeated Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-16, 18-21, 21-19. Saina meet Nozomi Okuhara of Japan.

In Men's Singles, Kidambi Srikanth defeated Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark. Sameer Verma beat China's Lu Guangzu.


In IPL Cricket, Rajasthan Royals were 112 for 6 in 16 overs against Chennai Super Kings in Jaipur a short-while ago.

Earlier, Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to bowl.

While Chennai tops the points table with 10 points, Rajasthan is at the 7th position with two points.  Out of six matches played so far, Chennai won five and lost one. Rajasthan played five - lost four and won one.
