Mizo National Front (MNF) President Zoramthanga hasbeen sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Mizoram. Governor K. Rajasekharanadministered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr Zoramthanga and his Council ofMinisters at Raj Bhavan in Aizawl this afternoon. Our correspondent reportsthat the MNF had dethroned Congress from the state by bagging26 seats inthe 40-member Assembly in the recently held elections.


"In the swearing-in ceremony at RajBhavan held at 12 pm, Mr. Zoramthanga has been sworn in as Chief Minister. Mr.Tawnluia has been sworn in as Deputy CM and also, 10 other Ministers have beensworn in.  74 year old Zoramthanga was ChiefMinister for two terms earlier from 1998 to 2008. Amongst others, former ChiefMinister Lalthanhawla, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conard Sangma, and leaders ofvarious parties attended the ceremony. Irene, AIR News, Aizawl"


In Chhattisgarh, the Congress is likely to announcethe name of its Chief Minister today. After the meeting with Congress PresidentRahul Gandhi, party's observer Mallikarjun Khadge, party's state in-charge PLPunia and other senior leaders will return to Raipur this evening for the meetingof the newly elected Congress legislature party. Our correspondent reports thatthe Congress had secured more than two-third majority in the 90-member Assemblyby bagging 68 seats in the polls.


"Newly elected Congress legislatureparty is scheduled to meet today. Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s decision regarding his choice forchief minister would be announced at the meeting. Earlier, AICC observerMallikarjun Khadge had a meeting with Congress legislators on 12th December inRaipur and submitted his report to the party President. Later, the Congress chief summoned senior state leadersBhupesh Baghel, TS Singhdeo, Tamradwaj Sahu and Charandas Mahant to New Delhito have a discussion with them.  AICCGeneral Secretary and party in charge for Chhattisgarh P L Punia was alsopresent during the meeting. In Rajasthan, Governor Kalyan Singh has invitedCongress leader Ashok Gehlot to take over as the Chief Minister. Sachin Pilotwill be his Deputy. A delegation of the party had called on the Governor lastnight about the government formation. The delegation handed over a lettercontaining names of MLAs supporting Mr Gehlot. The oath taking ceremony isexpected to take place on Monday. In Madhya Pradesh, Congress leader Kamal Nathwill take oath as the Chief Minister of the state on Monday.


President Ram Nath Kovind today laid the foundationstone of ultra modern Railway Station at Kevadia in Narmada district ofGujarat. This railway station will connect the Statue of Unity - the world’stallest statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel - to the rest of India through broadgauge railway line.Mr Kovind's day long visit coincides with the deathanniversary of Sardar Patel, the Iron Man of India.Speaking on Sardar Patel onthe occasion, Mr Kovind said:


"उन्होने आजाद भारत को प्रशासन की एक मजबूत व्यवस्था दी.वे सही मायने मे हमारे राष्ट्र के शिल्पकार थे,बापू और सरदार साहब के बिना आधुनिक भारत की कल्पना भी असंभव है,और देश के ये दोनों महान विभूतियों मानवता को गुजरात की देन है।"

Prime Minister Narendra Modihas also remembered Sardar Patel on his death anniversary today. In a tweet, MrModi said, Sardar Patel's thoughts, his rich work and strong efforts towardsthe country's unity inspire generations of Indians.Finance Minister ArunJaitley and Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore havealso paid tributes to Sardar Patel.


Prime Minister Narendra Modiwill interact with BJP cadres from five Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu thisevening. The interaction will be available on the Narendra Modi App from 4:30PM. It is part of the party's initiative, 'Mera Booth, Sabse Mazboot'. Mr Modiwill be responding to questions of the party ‘karyakartas’ from Kanyakumari,Salem, Namakkal, the Nilgiris and Coimbatore during the interaction.


Union HRD Minister PrakashJavadekar today said, rather than input-laid education, the government isfocused on providing outcome-based education wherein the students are themeasure for quality. He was delivering the convocation address at the 31stconvocation of Goa University in Panaji. Stressing that innovation is key tofuture sustainable development of India, Mr Javadekar said, Indians have beencontributors to innovation for long and now focus must be on becoming owners ofinnovation.

In Jammu and Kashmir, threeterrorists were killed and an Army Jawan martyred in an encounter inPulwama district early this morning. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of terrorists in the Kharpora Sirnoo village, the troops of Rashtriya Rifles, Special Operation Groupof state police and CRPF launched a joint search operation. When the forceszeroed-in, hiding terrorists opened indiscriminate firing, which triggered anencounter. A police spokesman said, while six terrorists were gunned down, twoArmy jawans were injured. One of the Army jawan later succumbed to hisinjuries.Seven stone pelters have also been killed in protests inthe area following the encounter. Talking to AIR, State Director General ofPolice Dilbagh Singh said:


India and France have agreed ondeepening their strategic partnership through cooperation in the Indo-Pacific,civil nuclear, defence and security, space, trade and economic sectors. Theagreement was reached during talks between External Affairs Minister SushmaSwaraj and French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian inNew Delhi today. In a joint press briefing after the delegation-level talks, MsSwaraj said, India and France have agreed to fight terrorism jointly.


"हमने आतंकवाद के विरूद्ध लगातार लड़ते रहने के अपने संकल्प को फिर से दोहराया है,इस छेत्र मे हमारे बीच सहयोग अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंचों  जैसे की एफएटीए इस पर भी है.दोनों पक्ष यानी भारत और फ्रांस जैतापुर परमाणु विद्युत परियोजना को जल्दी से जल्दी शुरू करने की दिशा मे कार्य कर रहे हैं।"


The Minister added, the twocountries are working together in several areas including climate change. Shethanked France for supporting India's bid for a membership of Nuclear SuppliersGroup (NSG) and United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

In Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksatoday resigned from the post of the Prime Minister after just seven weeks. MrRajapaksa was appointed the Prime Minister by President Maithirpala Sirisena on26th October suddenly replacing Mr Ranil Wickremsinghe. However, he failed togarner majority in Parliament and the President's attempt to dissolve it wasnullified by the Supreme court in a decision on Thursday. Mr. Rajapaksa alsosuffered setback at the hands of a lower court which restrained him fromfunctioning on a quo warranto petition filed by Mr Wickremsinghe and his MPs. TheSupreme Court had refused to vacate yesterday an interim order of lower courtrestraining Mr Rajapaksa and his Cabinet from functioning and fixed hearings inJanuary after vacation. Mr Wickremsinghe will be sworn in again to the post ofPrime Minister tomorrow along with his Cabinet. Our Colombo correspondent hasfiled this report:

In Nepal, at least 20 peoplewere killed and 17 injured in a road accident in Nuwakot district last evening.The incident occurred when a minitruck skidded off the road and plunged 500meters at Ghyanphedi area. Police said, 19 people died on the spot, while onesuccumbed to his injuries later. More than 40 people were in the truck duringthe time of the accident.


RSS defamation case againstCongress President Rahul Gandhi has been adjourned till 16th March next year bya Bhiwandi Court in Mumbai. The court earlier framed charges against Mr Gandhiunder Indian Penal Code. The Congress President pleaded not guilty.RSS workerKunte had filed a case after Mr Gandhi's speech at an election rally in 2014.The Congress Chief had alleged that RSS was behind the assassination of MahatmaGandhi.


Rio Olympics Silver medalist PVSindhu has stormed into the summit clash of Badminton World Federation (BWF)World Tour Finals at Guangzhou in China. In the semi-finals this morning,Sindhu defeated Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, in straight games, 21-16, 25-23. Sindhuwill face Japanese Nozomi Okuhara tomorrow for the season-ending title.
