  • Congress President holds hectic parleys to choose Chief Ministers for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh; decision awaited.

Hectic parleys are on to choose Chief Ministers for Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Marathon meetings were held at the residence of Congress president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi today. Mr Gandhi held one-on-one meetings with the top contenders in Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot before taking a final call.

Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia, the front runners for the post of Chief Minister in Madhya Pradesh also met Mr Gandhi. Yesterday, the newly elected MLAs of the states had passed a resolution urging Mr Gandhi to take a final call on the names. Our Bhopal correspondent quoting party sources reports the Congress Chief held consultation with party central observer A K Antony along with AICC General Secretary Deepak Babariya:

"While senior Congress leader Kamal Nath is considered ahead in the race for the chief minister post in Madhya Pradesh, he is being is challenged by Jyotiraditya Scindia for the top slot.Party sources claimed that amid hectic lobbying for the top post, Congress chief met the central observer A K Antony along with the AICC general secretary in-charge Deepak Babariya and later also met the contenders. Congress Chief had also sought views of party workers through an internal messaging system. The sources added that the Congress is also toying with a formula to appoint deputy chief minister in the state. Sanjeev Sharma, AIR News, Bhopal."

Party observer in Chhattisgarh Mallikarjun Kharge and party incharge PL Punia will meet Mr Gandhi this evening. 


K. Chandrashekar Rao was sworn-in as Telangana chief minister for the second consecutive term today. He took oath of office and secrecy at a simple ceremony held on the lawns of Raj Bhavan this afternoon in Hyderabad. Governor ESL Narasimhan administered the oath. 

Along with Mr Rao, party MLC Mohammed Mehmood Ali, who was deputy chief minister in the previous TRS government, took oath as a minister.

"Two days after Telangana Rastra Samithi secured a thumping majority over two thirds of the 119 member Assembly, K Chandrasekhar Rao, has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Telangana for a second straight term today. Mr Rao has taken his oath in Telugu in the name of God at a simple ceremony. He already announced that forming a full-fledged cabinet will take a few more days as he is taking all aspects into consideration. As per the Assembly strength, Telangana can have maximum number of 18 ministers in the current scenario. Lakshmi, AIR News, Hyderabad."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated K Chandrasekhar Rao on taking oath as the Chief Minister of Telangana. In a tweet, Mr Modi extended best wishes for his tenure ahead.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed on the need to improve last mile delivery and focus on streamlining procedures to improve ease of doing business. He said it would improve not just the "Doing Business" rankings, but also increase the "Ease of Living" for small businesses and the common man. Chairing a high-level meeting to review progress with regard to "Ease of Doing Business in New Delhi today, Mr Modi said, as an emerging and vibrant economy, it is extremely important for India.

During the meeting, Mr Modi was briefed on progress being made on various parameters related to Ease of Doing Business. India’s rise in the World Bank “Doing Business” rankings over the last four years, was also taken note of. 


Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day on the second consecutive day today following protests by opposition parties on different issues. In the Lok Sabha, alleged irregularities in the Rafale aircraft deal and other issues rocked the proceedings. As the House re-assembled at noon after two brief adjournments, Congress members again trooped into the well, raising slogans demanding a JPC probe in the Rafale aircraft deal. Shiv Sena members were also in the well, demanding construction of temple in Ayodhya.

In the Rajya Sabha also AIADMK and DMK created uproar demanding  protection of Cauvery Delta farmers in Tamil Nadu leading to adjournment for the day.


The Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against absconding billionaire Mehul Choksi, accused of cheating Punjab National Bank to the tune of over 13,000 crore rupees. CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said, the Interpol has issued the Notice on the CBI's request. The Indian Agency had given a very strong rebuttal to the claims of the fugitive billionaire to the International Police Organisation in September.

Choksi, who escaped in the first week of January this year after he and his companies cheated the bank, has taken citizenship of Antigua.

A Red Corner Notice is a kind of international arrest warrant for fugitives where Interpol requests its member countries to arrest or detain them.


The National Council meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party will be held in New Delhi on 11th and 12th of next month. Briefing media after the meeting of party's national office bearers in New Delhi, party General secretary Bhupender Yadav said, BJP President Amit Shah today held a meeting with party's national office bearers to decide the calendar for the spate of meetings. He said, a two-day 'Scheduled Caste morcha' meeting of the party will be held on 19th and 20th of next month in Nagpur. He informed that the 'Scheduled Tribe morcha' meeting will be held on February 2nd and 3rd in Bhubaneswar and the 'OBC morcha' on February 15th and 16th in Patna. Mr. Yadav said:

"2019 के तैयारी के लिए इस पूर्व निर्धारित बैठक में पार्टी के सभी राष्ट्रीय नेता मोर्चों के इन सम्मेलन में जाएंगे और मोर्चों के द्वारा पार्टी के सारे विषयों और विचारों को 2019 की तैयारी की दृष्टि से की जाएगी। इस दृष्टि से सारे प्रदेश अध्यक्ष और पार्टी के सब संगठन मंत्री और राष्ट्रीय पदाधिकारी सब लोग उपस्थित थे। ये बैठक शुद्ध रूप से पहले से आने वाले अधिवेशन के विषयों की तैयारी के लिए थी।"

The central board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will meet under new Governor Shaktikanta Das tomorrow. One of the key agenda for the upcoming board meeting is likely to be the governance issue and the role of central board in the decision making of the RBI. The meeting is likely to review the progress in some of the decisions taken in the last meet on November 19. Our Mumbai correspondent reports among other issues, the present scenario in Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector may also figure.

Soon after taking over the reins of the RBI, Mr Das said, he will try to uphold the autonomy, credibility and the integrity of the great institution and take every stakeholder, including the government, along in a consultative manner. The new Governor also said he will take measures which the economy requires in a timely manner.


Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said that India must not fall to the temptation of populism as it is short-lived and would not be beneficial in the long-term. Addressing India Economic Conclave in New Delhi today, Mr Jaitley said, rural India has to be helped but through investing in infrastructure and education, and not by doles and freebies. 

Speaking about the RBI, the Finance Minister said, autonomy and independence of the RBI has to be respected but the differences between the RBI and Government also have to be respected.

Mr Jaitley stressed on four key areas - Infrastructure, rural India, gender participation and areas rich in natural resources where investment needs to be done. He said, if the economy grows at 8-9 per cent in the next few years, India can realise the dream of a 5 trillion dollar economy.


The nation is paying homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives while defending Parliament House in the terror attack on this day in 2001. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the Parliamentarians in paying tributes to the martyrs in the Parliament House premises. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Union Ministers also paid homage to the martyrs. Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, BJP President Amit Shah, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi also paid floral tributes to the martyrs.

In his message, President Ram Nath Kovind said India gratefully remembers those martyred while defending Parliament from terrorists. Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted the valour of the martyrs and said their courage and heroism inspires every Indian.


Reducing the temperature of an air conditioner from 20 degree to 24 degree will help in saving upto 20% of energy. Talking about the optimum temperature level for air conditioning in an exclusive interview to All India Radio News, DG Bureau of Energy Efficiency Abhay Bakre said such a small step can help in saving  approximately 5000 crore of electricity bill  in a year

"We chalked out a guideline , we have issued it to large eshatblishment. Still we are trying to urge every consumer that water energy you will be saving by shifting from 20 to 24 degree that's is about 3 to 4 degrees increase in the temperature setting. It will be a substantial. May be somewhere between 15 to 20%. And our rough estimations that every degree is increasing, it will be a saving of about 5 to 6 % of energy.

In Jammu & Kashmir, two Lashkar-e -Toiba terrorists were killed during night long gunfight between terrorists & security forces in Brath Kalan in Sopore area of north Kashmir. The gunfight concluded with the recovery of arms and ammunition from the operation site.


The depression formed in the South East Bay of Bengal seems to be moving North-Westwards towards the Andra Pradesh and adjoining Northern Tamil Nadu coast. Weather officials said, it is lying at 1150 km South-East of Chennai and 1330 km South East of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The MeT Department said it is likely to intensify into a deep depression by tonight and into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours. From coming Saturday, some places in North Coastal Tamil Nadu are expected to witness light to moderate rain for two days, with the possibility of heavy rain at isolated places.


Benchmark indices today rose for the third straight session. A surge in financial stocks in Asian markets and optimism over new RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das's promise to take all stakeholders along on key issues, helped the climb. Recovery in the rupee and positive cues from other Asian markets also influenced investor sentiment.


In the Men's Hockey World Cup, India today lost to Netherlands 2-1 in a quarter final encounter at Bhubaneswar. Netherlands will clash with Australia in the Semifinals on Saturday. In another quarter final today, Belgium defeated Germany 2-1. With this win Belgium has secured a berth in the semi finals. They will take on England on Saturday in the semi finals. 


In Badminton, Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu has secured second win in a group A match of the World Tour Finals in Guangzhou, China today.  She defeated  world number one, Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan 14-21, 21-16, 21-18. In Men's category, India's Sameer Verma dished out a dominating performance to outclass Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto in straight games.  He looked at ease against the 10th ranked Sugiarto, defeating him 21-16 21-7 in a 40-minute Group B clash.
