Uddhav Thackeray, 14 other candidates file nomination for Maharashtra Legislative Council polls

@OfficeofUT
In Maharashtra, a total of 14 candidates, including, Shivsena President and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray today filed their nomination papers for the upcoming Legislative Council polls. The election is crucial for the Chief Minister who needs to get elected before 28th of May, or risk losing the post. The State Election Commission had announced polls for nine seats which fell vacant on 24th of April. The polls were initially postponed in view of the Corona virus outbreak.

While ten candidates filed the nominations today, on the last day of filing nominations, four BJP candidates had filed their nomination last Friday. Besides Mr Thackeray, the other official nominees of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, Dr Neelam Gorhe of the Shivsena, Shashikant Shinde and Amol Mitkari of the NCP and Rajesh Rathod of Congress filed the papers. Besides, an independent Shehbaaz Allahudin has also thrown his hat in the ring.

The scrutiny of papers is scheduled for tomorrow following which proxy candidates, two each from the BJP and NCP will withdraw their nominations. In case the independent candidate passes scrutiny and does not withdraw, polls will be held on 21st of May with the results announced on the same day. The 288-member Maharashtra Assembly forms the Electoral College for this election. However, with numbers on its side, entering the State Legislative Council will be a cakewalk for Mr Thackeray.
