@RW_UNP
In Srilanka, the United National Party (UNP) led by former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe has informed the Elections Commission (EC) that it will be contesting the upcoming Parliamentary election on its own even as former UNP Minister and Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa has launched an alliance consisting of several UNP MPs.

UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam informed the Commission today that the party will contest in all 22 districts. UNP has been divided into factions led by Wickremsinghe and Premadasa since the Presidential elections last November which the latter lost to Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Both sides could not reach agreement on common symbol as Sajith supporters supported a common symbol which was not agree by UNP leadership. UNP sources said that they are still willing to work with the alliance led by Premadasa but the alliance will need to contest under the UNP.

They also said that the UNP is still willing to contest with Sajith Premadasa as the Prime Ministerial candidate but UNP will need to head the nominations board to pick the candidates for the election. Parliamentary elections are scheduled for next month with filing nominations beginning next Thursday.
