Sri Lankan Prez rejects election commission suggestion to approach SC over holding of parliamentary elections

Sri Lankan President   Gotabaya Rajapaksa has rejected election commission suggestion to approach Supreme Court over holding of parliamentary elections, which has postponed in wake of COVID-19 crisis. Secretary to the President, Dr. P.B. Jayasundara in a letter to the Election Commission, said that the question of reference to the Supreme Court in terms of article 129 of the constitution does not arise.

It said the date for fixing the poll is the responsibility of the commission and President has no wish to interfere with duties and obligations of the Election Commission. The letter added that as per the advice by the President, it is not possible at this point of time to state that the election cannot be held on or before 28th of May. The response came as parliamentary elections, scheduled for 25th of this month, were postponed in wake of COVID-19 outbreak.

The parliament was dissolved by Presidential gazette on 2nd of March and as such, the new parliament is mandated to meet before 2nd of June, which election commission has termed unlikely in wake of COVID-19 situation. The Commission had suggested for Supreme court advise on the issue, which has been turned down by President. Nominations were accepted before the announcement of postponing election was made.
