Sri Lanka’s parliament speaker denies accusations of political bias

AIR
Sri Lanka’s parliament speaker Karu Jayasuriya has denied accusations of political bias following the stand he took on the recent arrest of MP Champika Ranawaka.

In a statement issued today, the speaker asserted that he has always considered privilege issues of MPs without looking into their political party connections. It said the speaker had made a public statement and also visited the MP in prison as the normal procedure before arresting an MP had not been followed.

His comments came as few MPs of the ruling party had accused the speaker of taking sides saying the speaker was silent when MPs were arrested in earlier government.

The statement said a decision was taken at the party leaders’ meeting that the IGP and other relevant officials would be summoned to issue a warning.

MP and former minister Ranawaka was arrested last week over a road accident in 2016 in which a youth was seriously injured.

He was granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court this week while his driver was remanded. Meanwhile, an arrest warrant has been issued against another MP yesterday over making false claims during a press conference organized before Presidential elections held last month.
