Maharashtra govt to temporarily release about 50 pct prisoners to prevent the spread of coronavirus

Days after 185 prisoners in Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail were found coronavirus positive, the state government has decided to release about seventeen thousand prisoners on a temporary basis.

AIR correspondent reports, in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection in prisons across Maharashtra, the state government has decided to temporarily release about fifty percent of the inmates, as per the recommendations of a high-powered committee.

While five thousand under trial prisoners have already been released, Maharashtra’s Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has informed that process to release others is currently underway.

He added that three thousand prisoners facing jail term of under seven years will be released apart from nine thousand others, who are facing prison term of over seven years but are not accused in serious crimes like rape, money laundering, terrorist activities or organised crime. Meanwhile, outflow of migrants continues with two special trains, one for Bihar and other for Odisha leaving Mumbai today.

Apart from the Shramik trains, a special train, carrying 1107 passengers from Mumbai also left for Delhi this evening. As far as the Vande Bharat Mission is concerned, a flight carrying 225 passengers from Kuala Lumpur is expected to land in Mumbai shortly. This will be the seventh special flight to the city, which has seen arrival of over thousand passengers since Sunday.
