Govt reiterates CAA 'Internal Matter' of India; no foreign entity has any locus standi on country's sovereignty

@MEA (FILE PIC)
External Affairs Ministry today said the Citizenship Amendment Act is an internal matter of India which concerns the sovereign right of the Indian Parliament to make laws. Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said in a statement that no foreign party has any locus standi on issues pertaining to country's sovereignty. His remarks came following United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights filing an Intervention Application in the Supreme Court in respect to the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Mr Kumar said, government is clear that the CAA is constitutionally valid and complies with all requirements of India's constitutional values. He said, it is reflective of India's long-standing national commitment in respect of human rights issues arising from the tragedy of the partition of India. The Spokesman said, India is a democratic country governed by the rule of law and people have utmost respect for and full trust in the independent judiciary. He expressed confidence that the legally sustainable position would be vindicated by the Supreme Court.
