Former Indian football captain Carlton Chapman passes away

Former Indian football captain Carlton Chapman passed away due to a heart attack in Bengaluru today morning. He was 49 years old. He was hospitalised with acute back pain yesterday.

Chapman was a formidable force along with Bhaichung Bhutia and IM Vijayan in the 1990s. He won 14 titles, including the first edition of National Football League along with I M Vijayan and Bhaichung Bhutia. Featuring alongside I M Vijayan, Jo Paul and Raman Vijayan at FC Kochi, Chapman went on to win the 1997 South Asian Football Federation Gold. Trained in Tata Football Academy, Chapman joined East Bengal in 1993.

He is remembered for scoring a hat trick for the Kolkata club against Al Zawra of Iraq in Asian Cup Winning Cup. After hanging up his boots, he joined Tata Football Academy as an instructor. In 2017, he took over as the technical director of Quartz FC in Kochi.
