Former Indian cricketer and Uttar Pradesh Minister Chetan Chauhan passes away

Former Indian cricketer and Uttar Pradesh minister Chetan Chauhan passed away today following multiple organ failure. He was 73.

Chauhan was Minister of Sainik Welfare, Home Guards, PRD and Civil Security in the UP Cabinet.

Chauhan was initially admitted to PGI Hospital in Lucknow after being tested positive for the novel coronavirus last month. Later he was  shifted to Medanta hospital in Gurugram.

During his 12-year-long cricket career, Chauhan played 40 Tests scoring 2084 runs with 16 half-centuries and two wickets. With Sunil Gavaskar, Chauhan formed a potent opening partnership for India with the duo scoring over 3000 runs, including 12 century stands.

He was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1981. Chauhan was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, in 1991 and 1998.

President Ram Nath Kovind has expressed sadness over the death of Uttar Pradesh Minister and former Indian cricketer Chetan Chauhan. In a tweet, Mr Kovind said, a cricketer par excellence, Chetan Chauhan was a down to earth politician and an outstanding parliamentarian.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has expressed grief over the passing away of former cricketer and UP minister Chetan Chauhan. In a tweet, Mr Naidu said, Chetan Chauhan made immense contribution towards development of cricket and also served as the Member of Parliament for two terms.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi  expressed grief over the passing away of former Indian cricketer Chetan Chauhan. In a tweet, Mr Modi said Chetan Chauhan distinguished himself as a wonderful cricketer and later as a diligent political leader. The Prime Minister said he made effective contributions to public service and strengthened the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

Condoling the death of Chauhan, Home Minister Amit Shah said in a tweet that Chetan Chauhan served the country throughout his life, as a sportsman first and later as a public servant. He said, his death is a great loss for Indian politics and cricket.

Expressing deep sorrow over the passing away of Chetan Chauhan, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath  said that this is an irreparable loss for people of Uttar Pradesh and the world of cricket.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other State Ministers observed a two-minute silence as a tribute to UP Minister and former cricketer Chetan Chauhan at a Cabinet meeting.
