Cold wave condition intensifies in several parts of North India

Cold wave conditions continue to sweep several parts of North India.

In Himachal Pradesh, fresh snowfall was reported in middle and higher reaches of the state today. Most of the hilly region of the state, including Shimla, received snowfall.

The recent snowfall and rain has further intensified the cold condition in the state. Most areas of upper and middle hills of the state witnesses snowfall where as plain and low hills experienced rain.

Reports of fresh snowfall have been received from Kullu, Manali, Kinnaur and Lahaul Spiti. In State capital Shimla and its surrounding area Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda also experienced snowfall.

In tribal district Lahaul Spiti and Kinnaur, Electricity supply has been snapped at many places due to heavy snow. Circuit roads connecting villages in upper reaches of the State have also been disrupted following snowfall.

According to weather department snowfall is likely to occur at isolated places of upper reaches during next 24 hours.

There was intermittent light snowfall in most parts of Kashmir last night, but clouds made way for the sun this morning.

Qazigund - the gateway town to the valley - in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 0.9 degree Celsius, while the nearby Kokernag town registered a low of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius last night.

Leh recorded a low of minus 6.5 degrees Celsius, while the mercury in Drass settled at a low of minus 9.7 degrees Celsius.

Hundreds of stranded vehicles, mostly trucks carrying essential supplies, were allowed to move towards Kashmir today, a day after heavy snowfall disrupted traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

The MeT office has forecast mainly dry weather for the week ahead.

Cold weather conditions continued to prevail in Punjab and Haryana even as night temperatures went up a few above normal in most parts of the two states.

Chandigarh, the joint capital of the two states, had a minimum of 9.2 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal.
