Assam CM meets PM; calls for revival of flood management programme

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today and handed over a memorandum urging the Centre for revival of flood management programme.

According to a press release, Mr. Sonowal said that the flood management programme was an important source of funding for taking up flood and erosion management work in Assam. The revival of the program would enable Assam to take up the flood protection works on a renewed momentum.

Mr. Sonowal also made it clear that Assam is one of the most disaster-prone states in India. Apart from flood being a major problem, river bank erosion also poses serious damage to the socio-economic scenario of the State.

 However, he maintained that since river erosion is not included in the SDRF guidelines, quick and timely steps to counter erosion are not possible. He, therefore, urged the Prime Minister to take steps to consider river erosion as eligible calamity for consideration of assistance under NDRF and SDRF. 

He also sought Prime Minister’s support in expeditious approval of multiple Externally Aided Project proposals worth over 20 thousand crore rupees in key sectors such as Urban Development, Fisheries, Roads, Tourism, Healthcare, Power and Water Resources. Prime Minister Modi assured him of all possible help to solve the outstanding issues.
