Lok Sabha passes Institute of teaching and research in Ayurveda bill 2020

Lok Sabha today passed the Institute of teaching and research in Ayurveda bill 2020. The bill was passed by voice vote.

Union AYUSH Minister Shripad Yesso Naik informed the house that the bill aims at establishment of an Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda in Jamnagar, Gujarat. He said, the Institute of national importance will be a centre for promotion of quality and excellence in education, research and training in the field of Ayurveda and allied disciplines.

Earlier in reply to the discussion in the lower house, AYUSH minister assured that demand to upgrade the Ayurveda Institutes in Kerala and Arunachal Pradesh would be considered at an appropriate stage.

He said the Institute of national importance in Jamnagar would mark the beginning of many other such institutes to be set up in the country. Mr. Naik informed the house that Ayurveda treatment would also be now brought under the Insurance cover. Echoing thoughts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of taking Ayurveda to international platform, the minister said that special emphasis is given over research in the field for better recognition and acceptance across the world.

Raising concern over redundant teaching techniques and lack of quality and standardized education in the field of Ayurveda, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of Congress said, the professionals and stake holders working in the field should be given due recognition for better social acceptance of the ancient science.

He also emphasized on the need of clinical trials in the field of Ayurveda research for International recognition. Earlier initiating the discussion on the bill Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stressed the need for credible documentation of evidence-based research in the field of Ayurveda.

Poonamben Madam of BJP said, the creation of a specialised Ayurveda Institute will give official recognition to Ayurveda at International platform. She said the global market for Ayurvedic products is estimated to reach around 10 billion US dollar by 2022. Ms. Madam asserted that the world class level research to be undertaken at the newly created Institute would add impetus to the alternative system of medicine.

She further added that the country has emerged as a leading hub of wellness centre in recent times. Members from the state of Kerala unanimously demanded that institutes in Thiruvananthapuram and other places in the state shall also be accorded the status of Institute of National Importance.
