Gujarat: MeT dept says Cyclone Vayu likely to change its course, may hit Kutch coast on June 17, 18
Representational Pic
In Gujarat, the MeT department has said, Cyclone Vayu is likely to change its course and may hit the Kutch coast on Monday or Tuesday. It said the intensity of the Cyclone is likely to get reduced and may hit the coast as a cyclonic storm or a deep depression.
Ahmedabad Meteorological Centre Additional Director Manorama Mohanty said, it is also possible that the Cyclone may weaken and dissipate in the sea itself. The state government has asked people not to panic. Additional Chief Secretary Pankaj Kumar said, the government is closely monitoring the movement of the Cyclone and that necessary precautions are being taken.
Cyclone Vayu had earlier skirted the Gujarat coast, affecting Gir, Somnath, Diu, Junagarh and Porbandar which led to heavy rainfall in Saurashtra Region. Bus and train services; schools and colleges; and port activities are resuming in the state from today. With the help of a comprehensive strategy, the Gujarat government has set an example in how to tackle the Cyclone to minimize its damage.
AIR Ahmedabad correspondent reports the Vayu has made the state government, civic authorities, security forces and relief agencies swung into action right from day one. The government chalked out comprehensive strategy considering each stakeholder in order to reduce difficulty during the crisis. It shifted around 3 lakh people from the low lying areas to the safer place which is the highest displacement by the state so far.
Although the cyclone is losing its intensity day by day, it certainly impacted the lives of the people living in the coastal areas to a large extent. The humanitarian approach shown by the government administration as well as relief agencies certainly reduced the pain of the people of losing their home and helped them tackle the natural disaster in a better way. It created good memories of cyclonic evacuation among the coastal people.
