Cold wave conditions continue to grip North India

Intense cold wave conditions continue to grip several parts of the country.

In Delhi, the minimum temperature dropped to 3 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal on Sunday. The cold waves will continue to prevail at isolated places over Delhi today as well.

There is no respite from cold in Uttarakhand with higher reaches of the state reeling under sub-zero temperatures.

In Haryana, Hisar reeled at 1.6 degrees Celsius as unrelenting cold wave intensifies in the state and neighbouring Punjab on Sunday.

In Punjab, Gurdaspur was the coldest place recording a low of 2.4 degrees while Ludhiana, too, experienced a cold night at 2.8 degrees Celsius.

In Uttar Pradesh, mercury continues to plummet at many places due to intense cold wave conditions in the state. Dense fog prevailed at most places in the state affecting road and rail traffic. Minimum temperature in many districts oscillating between 0 to 4 degree Celsius. Strong winds have added to the chill.

In, Bareilly, meerut, agra, raibareily, shahjahanpur, kanpur and sultanpur districts minimum  temperature recorded between 1 to 4 degree. while Muzaffarnagar continues to be the coldest place in state recording the lowest temperature of 1.2 degrees which was 5 degrees below normal.

In the capital city Lucknow also temperature recorded 5 degrees below normal and it was 3.3 degrees Celsius. Fog has badly affected the rail and road traffic especially in western and tarai part of state.

Long distance trains are running hours behind schedule, while road traffic disrupted owing to poor visibility. According to MeT officials the chilly and foggy conditions are likely to continue in the coming days. Meanwhile Schools in many districts have been closed to save the kids from the wrath of the biting cold.

In Bihar, Gaya was the coldest place on Sunday at 2.7 degree Celsius, which was 6 degrees below its normal minimum temperature. As per the Met bulletin, Gaya would witness cold wave today with minimum temperature likely to hover around 3 degrees Celsius.

Most parts of Odisha is also reeling under intense cold wave with the mercury plummeting to 3 degree Celsius at Daringbadi in Kandhamal district, making it the coldest place in the state.

The place along with nearby villages witnessed snowfall with nail-biting cold has brought normal life to halt. Another place Phulbani in Kondhamal district recorded 4.5 degree Celsius yesterday.

Mercury dropped below 10 degree Celsius in 18 towns and cities in the state with Bhubaneswar shivering at 8.2, the lowest recorded in the capital city in the last 22 years.

Due to drop in mercury many birds were found dead in several parts of the state, particularly from the high-altitude areas of the hilly region. The Nandankanan Zoological Park in the outskirts of the capital city Bhubaneswar has taken all possible steps to prevent any kind of problem that can affect the lives of animals.

The local MeT office said severe cold wave conditions are likely to continue over some parts of interior Odisha till next four to five days. SN Pattnaik, AIR News, Sambalpur.
