Chris Morris became the costliest ever player at an IPL auction for Rajastyhan Royal while Krishnappa Gowtham became the costliest Indian uncapped player for Chennai Super Kings at the IPL 2021 auction.

The IPL 2021 auction was held in Chennai and all the 8 teams are looking to make some additions to their squad. Punjab Kings had the biggest purse coming into the auction and are looking for another rejig. Even Royal Challengers Bangalore are looking for a revamp while Chennai Super Kings look to create a new core.

Cheteshwar Pujara was also sold to Chennai Super Kings. A total of 292 players were enlisted for the shortened auctions — 164 of them Indian and 125 overseas.

There will also be three associate players in the auction. With 61 slots across eight franchises up for grabs, Royal Challengers Bangalore has the maximum, 11 vacancies, to fill with a purse of Rs 35.4 crore while Sunrisers Hyderabad has only three slots available with Rs 10.75 crore in its kitty. The highest purse available is with Anil Kumble coached Punjab Kings, formerly Kings XI Punjab, which has Rs 53.20 crore available for spending on nine spots.

On the other hand, IPL’s perennial under-performer Glenn Maxwell once again fetched big money at the auction
with Royal Challengers Bangalore bidding a whopping Rs 14.25 crore to secure his services.

England all-rounder Moeen Ali also went for a high price of Rs 7 crore to Chennai Super Kings. Both Maxwell and Moeen had base prices of Rs 2 crore.

In contrast, Australian Steve Smith, who was released by Rajasthan Royals, was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 2.20 crore, only Rs 20 lakh more than his base price.

With the IPL back in India after being held in the UAE last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the focus will be on big-hitters as well as slow bowlers.
