In West Bengal, campaigning for the Assembly Elections has gained momentum as the BJP and TMC held rallies in the southern and northern part of the state on the same day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a massive rally in the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata today while TMC leader and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took part in a rally and addressed a public meeting at Siliguri.
Setting the tone for BJP’s political campaign in the state for the ensuing Assembly Elections, Mr. Modi said in his address that the people of Bengal want ‘Asol Poriborton’. He stated that ‘Asol Poriborton’ not only means the change of government but ensures that the youth will get education and employment, trade and business will flourish and people of every section of the society will get the same opportunity for development.
Mr Modi said that the development of West Bengal in the next five years will determine the development of next 25 years. Taking a dig at Mamata Banerjee, Mr Modi said that the people of the state relied on her but she and her party broke their trust. Countering Ms Banerjee’s campaign slogan, the seniro BJP leader said that Mithun Chakraborty is also Banglar Ghorer Chhele. He also criticized the TMC and said that women are being tortured in the state.
Mr Modi said that in this election, TMC, Congress and the Left parties are at one side and on the other side; there are the people of Bengal who want change. He also criticised the Left parties who are the allies of Sanyukt Morcha, for holding the hands of Congress. Mr Modi also assured to do a lot of things when they form government in West Bengal. Bollywood star Mithun Chakraborty today officially joined the BJP.
On the other hand, TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee led a protest rally of women at Siliguri against rising prices of LPG cylinder. She targeted the BJP government over the hike in LPG prices. After the rally, she addressed a public meeting at Venus More in Siliguri.
Countering the allegation raised by Mr Modi, Ms Banerjee said that women are safe in Bengal but not in the states like Uttar Pradesh which is run by the BJP. Mentioning the list of development works done by the state government, the TMC chief refuted the allegation that no development has taken place in Bengal during the ten years of regime of the Trinamool Congress.
