In West Bengal, at least two persons were shot dead and 5 others injured in a clash between two groups at Bhatpara in North 24 Pargana District.

According to police sources, both the warring groups indiscriminately used bombs and firearms during the clash near a newly constructed police station which was scheduled for inauguration today.

The police also opened fire in the air to bring the mob under control. State Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said that prohibitory order under section 144 of the CRPC has been promulgated in the troubled areas.

Addl. Director General of Police South Bengal Sanjay Singh visited the spot to take stock of the situation. Combat force and a strong contingent of police have been deployed in the area. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting in the State Secretariat.

Our correspondent reports that Bhatpara is witnessing series of clashes since General and Assembly by-elections in the area.
